This is the Bettle that is destroying our palm trees.
The pest Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) commonly known in the Algarve by Scarab-of-palm, (about 4 cm in length) is of tropical origin (Asia and Oceania) but, from North Africa, reached Spain in 1995 and later spread throughout southern Europe. In the Algarve it was detected in 2007, but mainly because of import and lack of effective countermeasures, spread over almost the entire country, including Madeira.
Recently, a Spanish laboratory discovered that a fungus can be “planted” in palm trees and has the ability to “eat” these beetles, and thus a natural and effective biological weapon. As is normal in this world that will enrich a few at the expense of the misery of others.
A praga Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) vulgarmente designada no Algarve por Escaravelho-da-palmeira, é de origem tropical (Ásia e Oceânia) mas, através do norte de África, atingiu Espanha em 1995 e posteriormente espalhou-se por todo o sul da Europa (cerca de 4 cm). No Algarve foi detetado em 2007, mas, sobretudo por causa da importação e da falta de medidas de combate eficazes, espalhou-se por quase todo o país, incluindo a Madeira.
Recentemente, um laboratório espanhol descobriu um fungo que pode ser “plantado” nas palmeiras e tem a capacidade de “comer” estes escaravelhos, sendo assim uma arma biológica natural e eficaz. Como é normal neste mundo, mais alguns que vão enriquecer à custa da desgraça de outros.
