Madeira to spend €3.2m on Christmas and New Year
Madeira is to pay out €3.2 million for the region’s Christmas and New Year celebrations, which attract many tourists to the Portuguese island.
At a press conference in Funchal, Madeira’s secretary for the Economy, Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, noted that the figure was a saving of €500,000 compared to last year’s spending on the celebrations.
The secretary said that a survey of hotels conducted last week indicated an occupancy rate around the Christmas period of 62.5 percent, while the New Year period is at around 90 percent and both figures are up on last year.
The Christmas lights in Funchal, will be turned on tomorrow, at a cost of €1.5 million, and the traditional New Year’s firework display will cost €800,000.
