The City of Sugar Museum starts this week to stimulate a series of ‘workshops’, conferences and thematic seminars that will take place throughout the year 2017 under the title of ‘The Sugar Cycle’.

The main mission of this group of events is to make known to the visitors the main testimonies of the sugar production and technology that this museum preserves in its collection, one of the most significant economic periods in the entire history of Madeira (15th to 17th centuries) .

These will be activities designed for all audiences and will allow the museum to become more interactive between your exhibition and the community.

The first workshop of this cycle will be held this Friday, February 24, at 3 o’clock on the theme ‘Candies of Alfenim and Crystallized Fruits’, and having as guest speaker the master Catanho José.

Catanho José was born in Funchal and from an early age developed a taste for pastry, a profession he has been practicing for more than 50 years. The fascination with sugar production led to his eventual dedication to sugar sculpture, having already performed countless works, representing the most varied themes. He is currently one of the only masters in Madeira who continues to recreate this secular art.

In this event, the participants will be able to observe the conception as well as to experience this delicacy already extinct in the Region, from the works of the Master Catanho José. Also will be approached the process of crystallization of fruits, used for preserves, a method that was Pioneer in the Region. Registration for the workshop is free but limited to existing space and can be made at [email protected]
