Thank you very much to Irene who has sent me this very interesting information.
The Madeira Multilingual School, formerly the “British School in Madeira” .
My husband and I have lived here (in Prazeres) since August 2012 when we ” retired” although since April 2013 I have been teaching at the Madeira Multilingual School (MMS) in Funchal. The school became a Candidate School for IB (International Baccalaureate) towards the end of that year. I became the IB Coordinator the following year.
The enthusiastic and hard working staff and students, well supported by the families, made really great progress in every area over the next couple of years. Following the authorisation visit by two IB consultants at the end of January, I am very proud and pleased to tell you that the Primary Years (ages 4-11) department gained full IB World School status – the first primary school in Madeira and only 1 of 3 in all of Portugal.
The Middle Years (12-15) department have their authorisation visit early in May and we are confident that we will again be successful – thereby the entire school will be recognized as an IB World School. We believe there is only one other such school on the mainland.
This is not only a prestigious accolade for the school but also for raising the profile of Madeira and Portugal as a whole on the International scene.
The General Manager and I recently met with the General Secretary of the Portuguese Education Authority whom we hope will attend at our Open Day on March 21st which is to celebrate the 14 different nationalities (currently) represented in the school.
All welcome – 10.00am and again at 3.00pm
