The Regional Government of Madeira plans to extend the Flower Festival to four weeks from next year to “maximize profitability” from the region’s biggest tourist poster, the executive said.
Miguel Albuquerque was speaking at the official opening of the 2017 edition of the fair, where the government invested € 422,000 over a three-week period, during which the hotel occupancy rate is 90%.
“We are very much looking forward to the return on investment we made at this Flower Festival,” he said, adding that the market “was what we intended.”
Therefore, the objective of the executive is to extend the event to four weeks already from 2018.
This year, for the first time, the Tourism Observatory of the University of Madeira will evaluate the real economic impact of this tourist poster, which currently surpasses the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Miguel Albuquerque stressed that it is essential to take the “maximum profitability” of the event, which, however, is made using a large percentage of imported flowers, since regional production is insufficient to support it.
Do you think this is a good idea, or are they trying to flog it to death a bit. Funchal looks amazing this year , and the flowers everywhere are lovely, but these cant last more than a week or so, so will they keep refreshing them or add something different as the weeks pass.
