Paulo Gonçalves who confessed to starting the fire in S. Roque that spread to several areas of Funchal in August last year, will know the decision of his trial on June 28, at 2:00 p.m.
This morning, at the Central da Comarca da Madeira, the last witness was heard and the final allegations made.
The prosecutor Paulo Oliveira requested the defendant’s conviction for negligent homicide crimes (three women died in the Pena area during the fires) and for the forest fire crime. The crimes justify, in the opinion of the representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, a sentence of more than 12 years in prison.
Paulo Gonçalves’s lawyer, who defended the acquittal of the defendant for the crimes of homicide and the condemnation for forest fire by negligence, is looking for a lower penalty. For the lawyer, this 24-year-old man is responsible only for a burn that has gone uncontrolled and should not be blamed for the death of the victims.
It is recalled that Paulo Gonçalves has been in preventive custody since August 2016.
His trial, whose panel of judges is presided over by Filipe Câmara, began on May 24.
