The tourist who on Thursday afternoon fell from a height of about 25 meters in Levada dos Tornos, on the site of Eira de Fora, in Camacha, slipped at a waterfall and fell into the river.

The 64-year-old Swedish man turned out to have some luck in the way he fell, with only a deep cut to the head.

The alert came from the woman who called 112, and there were about two dozen operatives from two corporations – Santa Cruz Municipal Firemen and Madeiran Volunteer Firemen. There were also members of the Forest Police.

The tourists entered the Levada dos Tornos in Camacha and travelled towards Gaula.

The rescue took about an hour and a half.
