Three municipalities of Guarda, Santarém and Portalegre and some parts of the island of Madeira present a very high risk of fire, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
According to IPMA, the municipalities of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda), Mação (Santarém) and Gavião (Portalegre) and some zones of the municipalities of Machico and Santa Cruz on the island of Madeira are at very high risk of fire.
The IPMA also placed 26 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Santarém, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu and Bragança on the mainland, and the island of Porto Santo at high risk of fire.
The fire risk determined by IPMA encompasses five levels, which may vary between the reduced and the maximum.
The calculation is based on the values observed at 1:00 p.m. each day relative to air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.
