A couple of bathers, Portuguese nationality, 19 and 17 years old, were dragged away from the coast by the current, when they were swimming in Garajau beach.
The alert was given to the Sub-Center for Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue of Funchal, at 12h09, through swimmer-rescuer in service on the beach of Garajau who, upon realising what was happening, entered the water to assist the bathers in difficulty.
In order to proceed to the rescue, the lifeboat of the Port Authority of Funchal ‘ISN-SR40’ was sent by 12h28. The rescue took place at 12h32, next to Garajau beach.
The bathers were tired but they were conscious, not needing immediate medical assistance.
The Local Command of the Maritime Police of Funchal took care of the occurrence.
