The Mayor of Funchal, Paulo Cafôfo, and Vice-President Miguel Silva Gouveia visited this afternoon in Largo do Corpo Santo, in the Old Town, to signal the start-up of a wireless internet network, common WiFi, throughout the low zone of Funchal, in a project co-financed by Turismo de Portugal.
In terms of the surrounding area of the project, it should be noted that “WiFi network was installed in the two main avenues of the city, namely Avenida Arriaga and Avenida do Mar, in the three main squares (Praça do Município, Praça do Povo and Praça Amarela) and in the central arteries of the city (Rua do Aljube, Rua Fernão de Ornelas and Rua de Santa Maria, to the fort of São Tiago), thus encompassing key points such as the Municipal Garden, the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theater, Largo do Chafariz, Mercado dos Lavradores and the Old Zone of the city to the Fort of São Tiago, in a total of 22 access points.
In a note from the Government, the mayor pointed out that this is “one more example of the progressive commitment of the current Executive in an increasingly intelligent city, which invests in the new information and communication technologies and administrative modernization, as determinant tools for the improving the quality of life and for the future of the population “.
According to local information, “the project allows both the local population and tourists to use the free WiFi network” Município do Funchal “for free and access the content that best suits them, namely in the three historic centres of Funchal – Sé, São Pedro e Santa Maria Maior. With the availability of Internet access, Funchal City Hall will also be able to search for restaurants, sights, reservations, buy tickets online for cultural events or consult operating hours of its museums and emblematic monuments, so that those who visit Funchal, and all those who want to walk, organise their plans better, thus capitalising on the Municipal Tourism Strategy. “
