He was known by ‘Jesus’, said in English. He had lived on the streets for many years, sleeping in nooks and crannies he could find to rest, covered when the cold pressed. He passed away yesterday, which indicates everything affected by sudden illness.
He was considered as an emblematic figure of the Old Town of Funchal. The warning that something was going wrong was given on Saturday night, when ‘Jesus’ was found in the park in the Old Town where he used to sleep, complaining of a bad mood. He was sent to the hospital, where he apparently arrived without life.
His identity is not certain, but there are some who claim to have British ancestry, by virtue of light eyes and fair hair, and also because of the nickname by the known era. But either the origin, or his real name or even family, are a mystery.
