A man of British nationality, about 84 years old, aboard the Malta-flagged ‘SAGA PEARL II’ cruise ship, sailing about 100 miles southeast of Funchal, was evacuated yesterday to the Hospital Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal.
The rescue was provided by the Navy, through the Coordination Sub-Center for Maritime Search and Rescue of Funchal (MRSC Funchal) in coordination with the Center for Coordination of Search and Rescue of Lisbon (MRCC Lisbon), the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) and Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC IP-RAM), this afternoon, 28 December 2018.
In agreement with information provided by the navy, the alert was received at MRSC Funchal at around 5:10 pm Friday , by telephone contact of the ship, and was immediately sent to the INEM – Urgent Patient at Sea Guidance Center, entity with competence to evaluate the clinical situation and to determine the type of evacuation, defining that, in view of the clinical picture, medical evacuation should be carried out by air.
The EH-101 helicopter from the FAP Madeira Air Detachment, based in Porto Santo, was activated and the passenger eventually disembarked at Madeira airport at 8:48 pm, where an ambulance from the Municipal Firefighters of Machico was waiting for him and transported him to the Hospital.
