Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas closes for automobile traffic next Monday, January 14, for the execution of the second phase of the works, an intervention that consists of an architectural project of re qualification of the street, as well as the replacement of the sanitation networks basic, and translates an investment of 313 thousand euros supported by the Municipality of Funchal.
The first phase was completed in November 2018, followed by an interruption in December on the occasion of the Christmas celebrations in down town. The section corresponding to this first intervention, between Rua Visconde do Anadia and Rua do Ribeirinho, already gives some indications regarding what will be the global project for the remaining part of what is one of the most emblematic streets of the city of Funchal.
Those in charge led by Paulo Cafôfo considers this work as a “great improvement of Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas, which is the main commercial axis of the city”, being “strategic for the local economy and for the tourism of the county”. The improvement of urban mobility, the adaptation of the road to greater pedestrian circulation, making the public space safer and more comfortable, the valuation of heritage, and the improvement of the equipment are objectives that the re qualification project proposes, and whose added value is evident, says the House about this intervention in that busy artery of Funchal. “With this intervention, this historic street will have a new image and better conditions for commerce, similar to what has happened over the years, in several other streets of the city.”
The aim of the City Council is “to make Funchal a more accessible city, with a better quality of life for the residents, but also a greater attractiveness for tourists, with the improvement of local commerce being one of the political priorities of the current solutions that improve the public space that we will continue to promote. “
For this second phase, starting on January 14, some changes are planned regarding the car traffic, which will be interrupted at Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo (south of Rua do Seminário) and Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas (between Rua Ribeirinho de Baixo and Rua do Carmo), while maintaining access to the Anadia car park, through Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo.
After finishing work on Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo, it will follow Phase 3, where the road stop will be maintained at Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas (between Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo and Rua do Carmo). Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo, on the section south of Rua do Seminário, allowing circulation to Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas.
In Phase 4, the last phase, the intervention will take place in Largo do Phelps and Rua do Carmo, between Rua 31 de Janeiro and Rua Cooperativa Agrícola do Funchal, so it is necessary to carry out road traffic in a direction habitual at Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas and Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo, allowing access to the car park through Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas and exit towards Rua do Carmo. When arriving at Rua do Carmo, the driver can follow in the normal direction of traffic or turn left towards Rua das Hortas.
The Câmara do Funchal requests that “due to the constraints anticipated, traffic in the affected streets should be avoided, using as an alternative the Avenida do Mar and the Madeiran Communities, Rua João de Deus and Via 25 de Abril”, adding that “during Phases 2 and 3, the loading and unloading operations will be carried out at Rua do Carmo, on the transit road that allows access to Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas.
