The Municipal Civil Protection Service and the Funchal Fire-fighters are in place to coordinate the operation, which also has the Madeiran Volunteer Fire-fighters, Municipal Firefighters of Santa Cruz, Volunteer Fire-fighters of Câmara de Lobos, PSP and two vehicles of the GNR, with 24 vehicles on the ground and 63 firefighters. These are the most updated numbers advanced by the Câmara do Funchal.
The vacant property, now on fire, was used by homeless people to spend the night.
The building, which dates back to 1929, is part of a hotel project of the Avelino Farinha e Agrela (AFA) group, which already had a hotel project for the building.
One of the administrators of the AFA, Bruno Freitas, told the journalists that the project was about to “move forward in early 2020”, and that this situation would jeopardise its implementation.
