The Captain of the Port and Local Commander of the Maritime Police of Funchal, in coordination with the Sub-Center for Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue of Funchal (MRSC Funchal) and with the Regional Civil Protection Service of Madeira (SRPC IP-RAM), coordinated Monday the rescue operations of a female individual about 40 years of age on a cliff in the area of Ponta das Gaivotas (near Quinta do Lorde).
The alert was given by 5:23 pm on February 25, 2019, by telephone to the Maritime Police, by a vessel that was in the area, informing that a car had fallen from a cliff and was at the foot of a cliff in the area of Ponta das Gaivotas.
A SANAS Madeira (ATLÂNTICO 1) lifeboat was immediately activated, according to the protocol of cooperation between the Navy, the National Maritime Authority and the Madeirense Association for Relief at Sea and in compliance with the Integrated Plan of the Port Authority of Funchal (ISN-SR40), agents of the Maritime Police, both by land and sea, elements of the Public Security Police and members of the Firefighters Volunteers of Machico.
At 18h08, the information received that inside the car was only a female, apparently lifeless. After evaluation by members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Machico, it was verified that it would not be feasible to extract the victim by sea, and means were activated to proceed with the extraction by land.
After very complex maneuvers, performed by the rescue team of the Volunteer Fire Department of Machico, considering the location of the victim, the extraction was completed at 9:16 pm, and the death on the spot was verified by the Health Delegate and transported the body to the Cabinet of Forensic and Forensic Sciences of Madeira.
The Local Police of the Maritime Police of Funchal took care of the occurrence.
Very sad end for this young lady who it seems took her own life. Thoughts are with family and friends.
