A young man of Portuguese nationality, who was swimming next to the Child and Youth Home Vila Mar in Lazareto, was rescued today by the Sub-Center for Coordination of Maritime Search and Rescue (MRSC) of Funchal, at 7:04 pm, after showing difficulties in returning to the coast (Lazareto Pier) due to the current of the sea at that time.

An individual on the spot noticed the difficulties of the young man and alerted the Regional Civil Protection Service, which in turn communicated what happened to MRSC Funchal.

In order to proceed with the rescue, the lifeboat of the Port Authority of Funchal ‘ISN-SR40’ was launched, which sent the young man to the Marina of Funchal, where he was awaited by an ambulance of the Madeiran Volunteer Firemen. The young man was in hypothermia, but conscious, and was later transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.
