The death toll has now risen to 29 as one of the seriously injured lost her life. 20 people remain in hospital some of them serious.
The Regional Government met today, extraordinarily, having deliberated for the decree of regional mourning for three days, starting tomorrow, due to the tragic accident that happened this afternoon in Caniço.
Here is the text of the resolution:
‘In view of the tragic events that occurred today in the parish of Caniço and in the municipality of Santa Cruz, which resulted in 28 deaths and 28 injuries, according to the latest official information, the Government Council, meeting just in plenary, under the (e), (f) and (dd) and Article 71 (1), both of the Statutory-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, decided to order regional mourning on 18, 19 and 20 Of april.
On the days referred to in the preceding paragraph, the flag of the Region shall be placed half-way in all regional public services and entities of the Public Sector Business of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
This Resolution shall enter into force on the day following its adoption. ‘
