It happened in front of the Farmers’ Market, after a curious tourist who watched the pigeons in the Ribeira João Gomes, in Funchal, drop their glasses that they use in to the river.

The curiosity to evaluate the birds was so great, that the tourists glasses slipped from the face, and lost them to the stream, and she could not continue to walk, due the degree of lack of sight which is very high and prevented her from walking safely.

The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters were alerted and proceeded to the scene with a rescue vehicle and ladders. The rescue operation brought together many folk who stopped to watch as usual. The men mounted rescue ladders down the river, rescued the glasses and handed them to the foreigner – who was able to continue to enjoy the city’s inspiring landscapes.
