The cruise ship ‘Oriana’ will hold its last stop in the port of Funchal today, and will continue in August to the East, where it will operate on behalf of the Chinese company that acquired it from P & O. The Madeira Ports Administration (APRAM) has prepared a special program to mark the final visit.
Thus, from 11.30 am a tender exchange ceremony is scheduled between the regional representatives and the ship’s commander. A photographic exhibition from the Club of Enthusiasts of Ships (CEN) and will make the offer of a frame with dedication to the company for the 160 visits of the ‘Oriana’ in the Region.
The departure of the ship, between 4:30 and 5:30 pm., will be accompanied by water jets from the APRAM tugboat, the whistle of pilots and the flag of the Region on the balcony, as well as the performance of the folk group “Monteverde” and the presence of port officials, CEN partners, shipping agents and other officials.
The first visit of the ‘Oriana’ in Funchal took place on April 12, 1995 and was also marked with great celebration. During these 24 years the British cruise ship brought to Madeira more than 280 thousand passengers and more than 128 thousand crew.
Were any of my readers on the first visit in 1995 I wonder.???
