20 firefighters supported by 8 firefighting means are currently controlling the fire that broke out last night in the parish of Prazeres, Calheta. The mayor of Calheta, Carlos Teles, recently addressed the situation of the fire and explained that the objective at this time is to prevent the fire from spreading to the eastern part of the parish (Sítio da Carreira) and also to the Maloeira area.
The Jardim Atlântico Hotel, where some guests frightened by the proximity of the fire, have chosen to come to the road, is currently properly protected without the need for evacuation. Even so, some guests preferred to leave the hotel. The mayor also guaranteed the housing in the surrounding area is safeguarded.
On the ground are also technicians from the City Hall and members of the Parish Council who are monitoring the situation.
Carlos Teles also said that the existing path in the area and that access to Paul do Mar was closed either way upwards and downwards, as a precaution and will continue until further indications.
