Images released today by Miguel Sá, through social networks, show a Monk seal enjoying bathing in the warm waters and mild climate of the Funchal Port.

The video, apparently filmed aboard a sailboat, shows the animal repeatedly diving, a short distance from the south coast of Madeira.

Monk seals are native species of Madeira, the only seals in Portugal and also the rarest in the world, and are therefore protected by law.

Although they are apparently docile creatures, according to the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, observing a monk seal should be from a distance for your safety and welfare, and to not disturb or feed it.
