The Funchal City Council has secured funding for the benefit of the Farmers Market from Turismo de Portugal. President Miguel Silva Gouveia visited the market this morning, on the sidelines of the 79th anniversary of this emblematic space, and announced this intervention, which will ensure the benefit of Praça do Peixe ( The fish market) and the recovery of the building’s electricity and sanitation networks, improving the working conditions of traders, and assuming it to be one of the municipality’s significant works for the year 2020.
A new Municipal Tourism Office will also be born on the 1st floor of the Market, whose work begins in the coming weeks. Overall, this is a total investment of the Funchal City Council estimated at 294 thousand euros, which will be funded 80% by Turismo de Portugal, by its Sustainability Support Line.
The president praised today “this great news on its 79th birthday, the result of another successful application for national funds, promoted by the executive of the Funchal City Council. The tourism program in Portugal aims to promote the qualification of destinations through the re-qualification of spaces with interest for tourism and heritage enhancement and this is an intervention that we consider essential in order to preserve such a symbolic space, with renewed working conditions and attractiveness, but always respecting an essential principle, which is the preservation of the identity of the Farmers Market ”.
Among other news that will mark next year in the Farmers Market, “the Sustainable Market action plan, which will begin to be implemented in 2020, enhancing the Municipal Strategy to Combat Plastic Pollution, a domain that stands out”. in which the municipality will do its utmost to implement concrete measures that reduce the use of plastic in the market ”.
Finally, another of the guarantees for 2020 is “a new competition for the use of spaces that are currently unoccupied, completing this present and future revitalisation that is intended for this one of Funchal’s most iconic spaces,” the president concluded.
This will be interesting to see a new tourist office in this market area, and I hope it will be well used by all the tourists that are constantly ripped off in this area. Shame on the tourist board who continue to promote it as one of the best places in Funchal to visit….
