Thank you to Kerstin & Jack Herodes for sending me this nice story and photos.
My wife’s nephew Alf visited Funchal the other week with the Swedish Royal Navy Sail Training Ship HMS Gladan. On board were 37 young sailors and our nephew, as third officer. He loves Madeira after visiting us a couple of times. This time we organised
a presentation of the Madeira Wine at Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where the most professional guide Sofia charmed the young men.
The dinner took place at ”my” favourite restaurant Estrella do Mar in Old Town. Next day was for individual adventures with some spontaneous reunions on my recommendation to Lavradores and the bar upstairs and then some poncha bars nearby. Just together with Alf, we had a delicious dinner at Marina Terrace of grilled Pargo. The whole crew were very enthusiastic about what all they had experienced in Funchal during their short stay.
Some facts about my wife Kerstin and me. We left Sweden as retired, to become residential on Madeira five years ago. We had investigated thoroughly, what could become our future potential best home in a good climate, with friendly and cultivated inhabitants, fascinating nature, good food and wines. I have been working and travelling around the world during my whole professional career as International Marketing and Information Consultant. And I had my preferences of where to retire among quite a few candidates.
