The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere has, since today, a system of meteorological snow warning for the Continent, Madeira and Azores, all warnings can be consulted in real time.

According to IPMA, the new system presents the highest discrimination of the affected regions according to altitude, with the inclusion of the 1600m level (beyond the 1000m level) which, for example, in the Continent allows restricting the warning to Serra da Estrela, when issued to the districts of Guarda (Gouveia, Manteigas and Seia) and Castelo Branco (Covilhã). The yellow warning from 1 cm thick snow regardless of altitude, taking into account the formation of ice on the roads.

The snow warning review process, now implemented by IPMA, resulted from a set of multidisciplinary civil protection activities.
