MADEIRA PROHIBITS THE DOCKING OF 21 CRUISES IN THE PORT OF FUNCHAL

By the end of this month, 21 ships were scheduled for the capital of Madeira. 

The Regional Government has just announced more restrictive measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic. According to DN-Madeira, the Presidency of the Regional Government will enact a ban on docking cruise ships and increase control measures at the airport.

The port of Funchal will not receive packages to avoid quarantine situations and at the airport control measures will be adopted on arrival.

  1. I don’e blame you in Madeira not letting cruiseships dock , I wish the uk would do a similar thing but we don’t & our country is filling up fast with the dreaded virus, we are not coming over to Madeira untill the virus is settled, we miss your beautiful Island

  2. I’m scheduled to fly to Madeira tmr with EasyJet (booked last year). I think the strict controls should take place PRIOR to the flight at the departure airport. Why wait until you arrive, and then what? Quarantine?

  3. Another potential blow to holidaymakers- insurance. LV- Liverpool Victoria are stopping travel insurance for the foreseeable future. I suspect other companies may follow suit. Insurance companies do not like paying out unless they really have to. Obviously existing policies must be honoured but people looking to renew may have problems.

    Even if you have your EHIC card you need travel insurance to cover costs of other expenses.

  4. Hi Ann. Why are you not going to Madeira? At times like this we should support our favourite places – not avoid them.

    1. Exactly, we are hoping things calm down a bit before we come out in June for the Atlantic Festival.

  5. Nobody in their right minds is going to be travelling unnecessarily in the months ahead.

    The best way to support the island (and yourself for that matter) is to stay at home and avoid risking potentially picking up and infecting the islanders with a deadly disease.

    Without tourists for a while, the island would not be ´decimated´, it would take an economic hit certainly but things would stay open, local people would still buy things and mostly things would carry on almost as usual for the local people……. Contrast that with what is happening in Italy where everyday lives (and the ‘precious’ economy) IS being completely decimated by having this disease take hold.

    1. If I and my wife are clear of any virus then we care cleared to travel and are no threat to anyone.

      1. You can be walking around spreading it for days without having any symptoms yourself. Same with anyone you come into contact with.

        That’s just how this thing is spreading so much unfortunately.

  6. A few years ago, not sure if it was sars or swine flu, They had an arch way to detect temperature at the bottom of the escalator, that you walked through when you arrived.

  7. Heading to Madeira tomorrow 13th march. Getting away to the sun from a miserable winter in Scotland ?

  8. I am not sure how badly the ban on cruise ships will affect the island. It is a regular complaint/observation that those passengers take a coach ride but spend nothing in the local economy. We are scheduled to visit Madeira in two weeks time. In our present state of health we see no reason not to travel.

  9. Usually, I am not at all impressed with the corrupt Madeiran government. But the way they have reacted to keep the covid-19 out is admirable. Instead of taking measures when the virus is already spreading, theirs have to date been able to keep the virus out. We’ll done!

  11. As regular visitors to beautiful Madeira we were very pleased to learn that decisive action has been taken by the regional government. I do hope people don’t unwittingly take the virus to the island – the well-being of the great Madeiran people is paramount.

  12. I had guests arrive here this morning from Amsterdam and they were not asked anything at the airport so it will be interesting to see if these measures are actually adopted. They were happy to fill in the questionnaire that we were sent but I agree with Audrey’s comment…. strict controls should be in place BEFORE the person boards their flight!!

    1. The controls, temperature checking and having to fill a questionnaire in at the airport, will be ready by monday apparently

The cruise liners do indeed make a contribution to the Island, by way of a tax per passenger when they dock, as these massive liners now carry thousands of passengers it will make quite a dent in the Islands income. However, this loss of income cannot be measured against the risk of introducing the virus and the subsequent cost to our health service – not only financial but the strain on the staff, bed numbers and taking away the support to patients in all other areas.

  14. I just came back from Madeira and had an amazing time. The fresh air, the weather and sea!

  15. My family and I have been holidaying on Madeira for the past 16 years and have owned a holiday home for 13 of those years. We love the island and it’s people and try to spend as much time there as possible. Any action to limit the spread of covid 19 is fine by us even if it means staying away for however long it takes. Madeira is a small island and not all its residents are wealthy. Hopefully the Madeiran, Portuguese and E.U. governments will support them to minimise the impact of the virus.

  16. Booked to fly to Madeira for the first time on March 18th. Really looking forward to it, so hoping and praying that nothing goes awry, though, in the circumstances, I would completely understand if the Madeiran authorities took stringent preventative measures.

  17. We are flying to madeira on monday 16th march just wondered are the resturants and bars open in funchal . Just read they had to shut from 11pm last fri not clear if they are to remain shut.
