While Nelio had a dentist appointment, I had a walk around Funchal.

  3. Great but scary pictures! I haven’t visited for the last two years (Algarve instead) but nothing compares to Madeira for me, so am booked for a two month stay starting in January. Haven’t booked a flight from Canada yet as they are really expensive right now, but keeping an eye on things. Hoping this all turns out well for Madeira (and me)! All the best to everyone there!

      1. If Tap via Lisbon, if Azores Air then PDL. Toronto to PDL is only 5 hours, TO to Lisbon 7 or 8, but Tap’s Airbus 330 neo is nice and comfortable.

  6. Looking at the Ritz webcam there seems to be a few more people about than last week. I think people’s confidence will build bit by bit and more will be out.

    Of course the main residential areas are further back from the sea.

  8. Lovely photos Tobi. So sad to see the emptiness around the Old Town and the Marina but little by littlet hings will get better – just give it a little more time and let’s hope that once international flights are back on line Madeira is the first to benefit.

  9. Good to see you out and about again Tobi and I have to say you are looking very well. Hope Nelio is okay following his dental appointment.
    It would appear we in the UK are quite away behind you all in Madeira with regards to the virus even though we went into lockdown at a similar time which is probably due to our never being as strict as yours. However, John and I are quite content to continue following the restrictions until we are officially told it is now as safe as it’s going to be.
    Enjoy it everyone and we hope it continues in you favour ?

    1. Busy in Lugar de Baixo too. Maybe the locals are staying away from Funchal for fear of any lingering contamination!

  11. Thanks TOBI, we have symptoms of withdrawal feeling sad in many ways for Madeiran’s but so pleased no fatalities and relatively few cases. Your photos show Funchal on another beautiful day. Just how we had to leave it the Friday after lockdown. Just hope we will be allowed to travel by August and be back to ‘our second home’. At present I’m in 12 weeks don’t leave the house. I’m not sure when the 12 weeks will expire, seems a rolling program! All the best, keep up the good work including ‘funnies’ a great way to lift spirits. We will be back, need a Prego or more!

  14. Such a shame, we love the beautiful island of Madeira and was lucky to be there just before the U.K. lockdown

  15. Fabulous to see the blue sky and the agapanthus in full flower. Little by little life will return to Madeira.

  16. My most favourite picture that lovely tree in old town opposite Bananas, just blooms all year, and next to my favourite restaurant O Portao. Been travelling to Madeira for over 25 years now well maybe even more years, originally with my late mother, and now with husband and sometimes grandchildren too. We are so going to miss our three week visit in June. Jacarandas look so lovely and agapanthus too. Thanks so much Tobi for all your updates on what is happening in Madeira I check in every day and you are so full of information as what is happening in Madeira. Sounds safe now however the island needs some positive news on tourist industry. Dare I admit that we are owners at Regency Club now part of Savoy.

    What time of day was that, Tobi ? And I imagine the cable car will be closed until further notice ?
    What has been really worrying me is how a social-distancing Tobi Poncha Tour is going to work,lol.

      1. Tobi, we are booked to come back January/February next year so hoping the Tobi tours will be back up and running by then; we so enjoyed the tour with you last year.

  19. Lovely pics Tobi, sad and nice,at the same time. Lovely and quiet to walk around, but sad because of the lack of tourism, and atmosphere.
    Longing to return to Madeira, but when that will be, who knows..

  22. Being of a certain age and on strict lockdown here your pictures, posts and lockdown fun just keep our spirits up ready for our next visit next March. We have been coming since 1984 and just love everything about Madeira, our second home.
    Thank you Tobi for all your hard work it is much appreciated.
