Madeira with 6 new cases of covid-19

Madeira has six new cases of covid-19.

These are 6 imported cases identified in the screening operation at Madeira airport, 4 from the United Kingdom, 1 from Germany and 1 from the Czech Republic.

There is one more case recovered.

Today there are 49 active cases, of which 37 are imported cases identified in the context of surveillance activities implemented at Madeira Airport and 12 are cases of local transmission.

  1. 4 from the UK, that is bad. I wonder if they were a group travelling together or 4 scattered around the plane?

  3. Does anyone know what happens if one of a small group arriving at the airport is found to be positive? Do all the group have to go into quarantine for 14 days? Can that quarantine be in the planned tourist hotel or would it be in specially designated residence?

    1. I don’t think they will quarantine the whole group. But if they do, it will be in the hotel where they put everyone. This is the Pestana casino park for the people from UK I believe.

  4. Given the general slackness in the UK, it is possible that UK citizens will arrive in a host country and be tested positive. One can have the virus and not be aware. And it is difficult to get a test in the UK if one has no symptoms. There are now 3000+ new cases per day in Englsnd so the problem is getting worse with an R rate of above 1. Hence the SIX rule here from tomorrow. Which I hope will be enforced

    1. Heathrow is looking to introduce a 20minute test on arrivals. It’d be nice if you could get tested on the way out too. Test positive and you don’t fly. Waiting 20 to 30 mins for a result is no hardship.

      If these 20mins tests prove trustworthy maybe overseas airports, such as CR7, will changeover to them.

  5. Regarding other travellers who were on the same plane as those who test positive on arrival, do they also have to isolate? Do they even get informed?

  6. Madeira should as the departing airport let’s say Gatwick or Manchester or Heathrow to do a thorough check with passengers checking in 4 hours prior to passing through customs as a precautionary method they are not varying the virus or displaying any symptoms of the virus.

    We left Maderia in a panic in March when they closed the airport. I have these questions . Will appreciate the answers before thinking of coming back.

    1. What happened to the tourists when they tested positive ? Do they being sent back on the next plane ?
    2. If they being quarantined in the hotel for 14 days and after 14 days they still tested positive , what happen to them? Are they allow to go free ? I think probably not .
    3. If they required hospitalization who pay for the medical cost ? Many insurance companies may not cover the cost anymore since it is a pandemic.
    4. Where can I find these info on the web ?

    1. Hi, indeed if you are positive you go to a hotel, and you will remain there till you test negative, I think you need two negative tests. If you do a search there are many insurance companies offering covid insurance, we have one in Madeira just Google search covid insurance Portugal. Very few are coming to the island with the virus, so we are lead to believe, so it’s a very safe place still in Europe.
