Of course not news for Madeira, but I think a huge congratulations is in order for Joe Biden for beating Trump to become the new President of the United States.

    1. Biden is not overly fond of the UK and is more interested in the EU. Sorting out a trade agreement between the UK & US will be more complex now.

    2. No it is not. Biden is an IRA sympathiser and wants a united Ireland. He is also pro-European and is not a friend of the U.K. Besides which, he is rumoured to have dementia!

  3. Think having Biden in the White House will be good in all sorts of ways, including on the international front. He has a lot of foreign policy experience, respects NATO and has said he will take America back into the Paris Climate accord.

    We can forget about narcassistic Trump and the totally repellent Rudy Giuliani. A world leader who spent 300 days a year playing golf while people died won’t be missed .

  11. Thanks so much Tobi! We in America have a lot of work to do to recover from our four years of political and leadership dysfunction, the Trump nightmare. It feels like a national awakening from a long, very bad dream. Unfortunately, the nightmare was true, but we will roll up our sleeves, use science to guide our Covid19 responses, focus more on unifying our people, rejoin the Paris accord and fund a national transition to renewables and hopefully patch up the many international relationships that Trump mismanaged. We invite the world to join us in a collective sigh of relief and we hope we can all, the world over, work more closely together to tackle our shared challenges.

  13. Why are you congratulating Biden even before all the votes are counted – and considering there seems to be election fraud which needs to be investigated?
    The main stream left-wing media is jumping on a ‘potential’ win for Biden – who is a doddery old man and may not even see out the next year. He could not even recall who his granddaughter was and his wife needed to prompt him every time he made mistakes!
    He even confirmed the Democrats had a wide-scaled fraud situation in place.
    Tobi – I really love Madeira, but calm down – before you congratulate a man before all the votes have been counted on.

America now has a highly respected adult, with years of experience in government, as her president and a highly respected Woman of Color, with years of experience in government to be her Vice President. Both are surrounded by experienced smart people who are committed to getting America back on track. Once you have adults, you can have debates about policies. Guess what, we are all never going to agree on policies. This was a tough battle and this is a time for celebration. Bring on the champagne!

  15. Be careful what you wish for Biden fans. I don’t care for either candidate. But I fear Biden more than I dislike Trump. The greatest threats to the West come from Iran and its proxies and from China. The latter has just got Australia in a stranglehold of of dependency for example and is infiltrating the UK. So who will defend the West best ? And I doubt it’ s Biden. Sure, liberals, the left and virtue signallers and the woke community prefer Biden . That is what many of us fear.

    But note that the Republicans still control the Senate without which no President can do much. As Obama found in his second term. And the ultimate power in the US lies with the Supreme Court which is now tilted Right.

  18. My concern is Biden’s health. He said he had been in politics for 180 years, mistook his wife for his sister, and his granddaughter for his dead son. It would appear his cognitive skills are on the wane. Who knows what the pressures of this campaign have done to him. They should definitely have chosen another candidate to represent the Democrats. Biden needs caring for.

  20. THANK YOU TOBY for acknowledging our biggest victory ever! CHAMPAGNE IS FLOWING IN LOS ANGELES, AND ALL THE PROGRESSIVE PLACES IN AMERICA TODAY!!!
    And for all of you who still have doubts about Biden’s victory, or continue to spread the election fraud conspiracy theories, let me remind you that it was Trump himself who set up an Election Fraud Commission after 2016 election, which was disbanded quickly after it found NOTHING. ZERO. NADA. And by the way, Biden now has 4.1 million more popular votes than Trump. This still does not include a big part of California and NY, which are 65% democratic. So by the time counting is finished he will probably have at least 7 million more votes, and most likely closer to 8. And after all the counting is done, it looks like he might get a total of 306 electoral votes, with Trump’s 232. That would be Poetic Justice because that was the exact amount Trump won in 2016, to Clinton’s 232.
    So the spoiled little child can take his grievances to whatever court he wants. All they will do is laugh at him and throw his law suits out the window, just like they did in Wisconsin and Michigan. Ah, wouldn’t that be wonderful if his own conservative Supreme Court said: “Sorry son, go home to mommy”. Or as Bill Maher calls him: whiny little b****. Time for a grown up in the White House.
    He can now move to his buddy Putin. Maybe they can enjoy playing golf together in Siberia. Ice carries the golf ball farther. ?

There are serious differences between Biden / Tump supporters beliefs which, as now noted in some these replies, results in some aggressive and unnecessary comments considering we only really want to use your blog to keep us aware of activities on the glorious Island of Madeira.

  30. Amazing to read that people are regurgitating right wing lies and disinformation in this blog. Social media is a two edged sword. It allows this blog to exist but it allows an avenue for disinformation and outright lies.. It would hav been a dream come true for Goebbels.
    In the spirit of Goebbels there has been a plethora of false stories and manipulated videos challenging Biden’s mental acuity. It was strategy thought up by the Trump campaign. It was an amazing accusation when one considers the inanity and incoherent statements that Trump would regularly spew.
    The same could be said for the ridiculous claims that the Democrats are socialist. Someone also wrote that he is supporter of Maduro and Cuba. A little fact checking would reveal that he has spoken out forcefully against Maduro. In respect to Cuba he has condemned the Castro regime and believes that calibrated engagement can be more fruitful than measures that only strengthen the communist government. On a side note it is interesting that the US has political and economic relationships with dozens of authoritarian regimes throughout the world.
    The same can be said for conspiracy theories about Biden family corruption. It’s amazing that these lies, some rooted in Russian disinformation efforts, have gained any traction when it is common knowledge that the Trump family businesses are considered so rotten that large American banks want nothing to do with them.
    It’s amazing to think that there are even Americans who actually believe, because they read it on line, that within the Democrat party there is a secret group of Satan worshipping, cannibals who are running a worldwide pedophile ring.
    I could go on and on but the point is that we all need to take time to fact check what we read online, especially if it comes from social media or political groups.
    Trump is without doubt a disgusting human being. He never woke up a day in his life thinking about anyone but himself. His lies and narcissism are without limit. Everything he touches eventually dies. What type of human being makes a political issue of wearing a mask while 100000s of thousands are dying. Four more years would have been a disaster for American democracy, a threat to the health of 100000s of thousands of Americans from the raging COVID pandemic, and a disaster for the rest of the world.
    Good riddance!

    even trying to intimidate the vote counters.
