MADEIRA WITH 47 MORE POSITIVE CASES

Today there are 47 new positive cases to report. These are 12 imported cases (6 from the United Kingdom, 2 from Luxembourg, 1 from Poland, 1 from the Czech Republic, 1 from France and 1 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region) and 35 cases of local transmission, most already associated with contacts or contexts of positive cases previously identified.

In total, there are 116 new cases that are currently being studied by the health authorities, all related to contacts with positive cases, situations reported to the SRS24 line or by SESARAM, EPERAM. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

The are today 23 recovered cases, Thus, there are now 517 active cases, of which 156 are imported cases and 361 are local cases.

  2. How is it6 from the UK? Also is there a significance if the number goes over 50, maybe the R number? Its been 49 twice.

  3. I don’t understand this: The entire South of the UK is in Tier 4. This means no travel allowed unless absolutely essential. Yet, easyJet flies every day to Madeira and seems to carry dozens of passengers. I am booked to travel to Madeira next week, but I cannot see how unless I cheat…. Am I missing something?

  4. One might learn thing or two of what NOT to do by looking at the record of the UK in its mishandling of much of the pandemic. It is evident that the virus is taking hold in the permanent population of Madeira. Compounded by the arrival of tourists/ returning Madeirans.

    Why not ban anyone entering Madeira without a valid negative test result ? It serms that UK residents are flouting the law by leaving much of the UK . Tier 4 bans overseas travel ( with some exceptions) and 24 million of us are in Tier 4 in England. If the airlines are allowing travellers from say London or the SE to travel they are party to law breaking too.

    Until recently Madeira was something of a safe haven from the virus. Now increasingly it looks like much of mainland Europe. That is a tragedy for its people and for its tourism.

  6. I thought arrivals from the UK had been banned for nearly a week now, but Easyjet and Wizzair continue to be listed as arriving from London airports. What is happening?

    1. Flights are not banned they are restricted to residents and Emigrants who hold an Portugal ID card, it’s been said many times and is on the GOV UK site. It’s only tourists who can’t fly.

      1. Having just checked EasyJet’s website I find it hard to believe they are filling enough seats on their Bristol/Madeira return flights, Jan 2/9 at £120.00 to make it profitable with just residents and emigrants and Jet2 are starting again on January 8.
        We are due to leave on the 9th January, returning on the 10th Feb for two weeks. Tobi, are you saying we will not be allowed in as we are visitors, not returning residents or immigrants or if let in what are the necessary tests and quarantine rules and if so, can the Madeiran economy stand much more ?

        1. The Portuguese Government FCDO has decided that only portuguese nationals and british residents can fly to Portugal (including Madeira) from the UK. Some countries have banned all flights from UK, other countries have allowed flights to continue restricted to its nationals.

          This is a top decision from the portuguese government. So, whether it makes sense, how long will last, if the economy can cope with it, etc etc, all those questions are somewhat irrelevant because this is a top decision that needs to be followed irrespective of the madeirean government agrees with it or not. Just like the Tier 4 rules in UK and the nonsense quarantine enforcement the UK imposed on passengers returning from Madeira for nearly 1 and a half month are very damaging to the madeirean economy and also there is nothing the local government could do about it.

          1. Antonio, Thank you for the clear and full reply. You have made it clear that even though in Tier 2 until the Portuguese government changes the rules, I will be remaining in the UK. You have made it much clearer than the Madeira Safe site and I thank you for your time and effort.

  7. Once the vaccine is rolled out things will improve, but it’s a massive programme and will take time. The new variant has arrived in Madeira, and is far more contagious (and now accounts for two thirds of new cases in London), but Madeira has been pushed recently as a safe place to go on holiday. No one should be thinking of going on holiday anywhere – if you’re in Tier 4, all non-essential travel is banned anyway. Madeira will get through this with our help (by not visiting right now).

  8. I’m due to be flying out on the 9th of January, I will need to provide an negative covid test that has been done 72 hour’s prior to flying to madeira.
