MADEIRA WITH ANOTHER RECORD OF 60 POSITIVE CASES

Today there are 60 new positive cases to report. These are 11 imported cases (3 from the United Kingdom, 1 from France, 1 from Spain and 6 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region) and 49 cases of local transmission, most of which are already associated with contacts or case contexts previously identified positive results.

There are 563 active cases, of which 163 are imported cases and 400 are cases of local transmission.

There are 14 recovered cases, and 120 cases under further study.

Today, 35 people are admitted to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, 31 to the Multipurpose Unit and four to the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to Covid-19.

    1. It will get a lot worse before it gets better. Expect big rises in numbers across Europe around mid-January.

  2. Why are people still flying ?. Please stay home, keep people safe, if you dont value youre own lives please value the lives of others. Is there any wonder this pandemic wont go away.

  3. It s the same all over Europe or even all over the world. Some stupid ingorants not able to follow the minor rules, kill buisness an happiness for the whole region.
    What is so difficult about wearing a mask? No one complains about wearing a T-Shirt, but a mask is a problem?
    I don´t get it!
    Every time I pass a bar, I see a bunch of people, standing together, laughing, drinking, talking… Sure, no one has a mask or keeps any distance.
    Thank you very much…
    Madeira has the biggest chance to proof it´s worthiness in Europes tourism, because it is one of the last areas people can travel to. And a lot do at the moment because many other warm destinations are closed. What a chance to become “famous” and to give a good picture for the future.
    But some destroy the chance….

  4. I walked downtown Funchal this evening. What Michael says is true. Bunches of people in bars, no masks, no social separation.
    Is it a surprise that the virus is spreading like wild fire?
    I can only agree with Michael – what’s the problem in wearing a mask?..

  5. I completely agree with Richard and Michael. I regularly walk in Ajuda and people (mainly locals, tourists too, whatever, everyone is guilty) are acting foolishly. I see crowds lining up to buy unnecessary stuff at the Forum, I see coughing and sneezing people sitting close together in bars, people putting their mask on the dirty restaurant table next to their food…can people please take minimal precautions, not be stupid, and not act like it’s essential to shop for sport or eat out in a pandemic, especially if you are coughing or showing symptoms of the illness? Idiots.

  7. What is nonsensical about trying to stay safe and at the same time protect others.
    The virus is on the rise nothing particularly holy about trying to comply with the rules more
    commonsense.

  8. Yes, there are some strange people on this blog who don’t seem to understand the situation of a deadly global pandemic. They don’t seem to want to follow the rules – although they are pretty simple.
    Why Russell should think that the stating of facts are “petty accusations” is beyond me.

  9. In October we observed people not following the rules as mentioned above and reckoned the virus would spread like wildfire before long. Another 60 today, it will be 600 by end January – how will Madeira’s medical facilities cope with that number….! Take care my friends!

  11. Bring judgment and shame back. People don’t have enough of a sense of shame because social approval matters less than it used to. That’s part of the reason we have an increase in cases. No shame, no sense of civic responsibility, just want to have a good time and must forage through discounts with hoards of possibly infected strangers. It’s obvious that when crowds gather and don’t follow basic hygiene and protective rules (wearing a mask that everyone has now), the conditions are such that the virus will spread far more rapidly. That should be obvious.
