SITUATION IN PONTA DELGADA “IS WORSE THAN I IMAGINED”, SAYS MAYOR

Miguel Freitas, president of the Ponta Delgada Parish Council, said that yesterday was “perhaps the worst day in the history of the parish” and left an appeal: “people not to go there, let the authorities work”.

After “complicated hours” and “a lot of distress”, the mayor points out that the storm “fortunately did not result in the loss of human lives” and that everything was done to ensure the safety of the populations, especially those who lived in homes that ran some risk.

On the day after, Miguel Freitas admits that “the situation is worse than I imagined”, in a scenario that is beyond belief. “Our cemetery is completely destroyed, we also have houses destroyed, a part of the historic cobbled road in the area of the church had its stones pulled out, and some paths and roads collapsed,” said Miguel Freitas in statements to radio 88.8 JMFM.
