Wind with gusts up to 110 km / h, waves up to 10 meters in maximum height and rain or downpours, sometimes strong, accompanied by thunderstorms and which may culminate with snowfall on Friday morning, this may be the result of passage through the archipelago of Madeira, from the afternoon of this Thursday, the 7th, of the Filomena depression.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has already issued, at the beginning of the night, a statement on the Filomena depression and its effects on the archipelago of Madeira and mainland Portugal.
It starts by realizing that “following the emission criteria established for the naming of storms of the 2020-2021 season, AEMET (State Meteorological Agency of Spain) was given the name Filomena to a depression, which is expected to be centered south of the archipelago of the Azores at 35 ° N and 28 ° W on the 6th of January 2021, and which is associated with a frontal system of moderate to strong activity that will affect the weather in the archipelago of Madeira and southern Portugal Continental “.
As far as the Region is concerned, according to IPMA the effects of this depression in the Madeira Archipelago will be felt by the increase in the intensity of the wind from the afternoon of the 7th of January, extending until the end of the Friday morning , day 8, with gusts up to 75 km / h, being up to 110 km / h in the highlands and at the eastern and western ends of Madeira.
Associated with this depression, predicted an increase in sea waves on the North Shore and in Porto Santo, with northwest of waves and significant height 4-5 meters, passing northeast of waves 5-6 meters at day 8.
It is anticipated if there are also periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy, and accompanied by thunderstorms. On the 8th there is also the possibility of snowfall at the highest points on the island of Madeira until the end of the morning.
