More recovered cases than new cases for 2nd day.

Madeira today registered 106 new positive cases to Covid-19, so the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) now counts 4,501 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the regional territory.

These are six imported cases (5 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and 1 from France) and 100 cases of local transmission, most of which are already associated with contacts or contexts of positive cases. Epidemiological investigations of the cases are still ongoing.

Also according to the Regional Directorate of Health (DRS) there are two new deaths to report since yesterday, so RAM now accounts for a total of 34 deaths associated with COVID-19.

It should be noted that in the last 24 hours the Region has 122 recovered cases to report, thus counting 2,582 cases recovered from Covid-19.

Also according to the DRS epidemiological bulletin there are 1,885 active cases, of which 111 are imported cases and 1,774 are locally transmitted.

Regarding the isolation of active cases, it should be noted that 73 people are hospitalized at the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital (66 people in a Multipurpose Unit and 7 in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to Covid-19) and 45 people are in isolation in a dedicated hotel unit, the rest remaining in their own accommodation.

In total, there are 184 new situations that are currently being studied by health authorities, which are related to contacts with positive cases, situations reported to the SRS24 line or to SESARAM, EPERAM. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

  1. The use of the word recovered simply means they have not died. A large percentage of the “recovered” cases have Long COVID and will suffer from debilitating effects for years to come. A lot of research is being done into effects such as chronic fatigue but no solution is on the horizon.

    1. I haven’t seen any figures published for the number of recovered Covid patients who have Long Covid and in the main, the younger people seem to be able to shrug off the illness. I would be interested to know your source.

  2. … Saying that “A Large Percentage” will suffer from Long Covid is simply Scaremongering and Sensationalising on a subject that is not yet understood ,, so the statement is Super Vague , Made Up and Not True ,, wait for Facts and Proof …

  3. The minute there is a slight sign of hope on the horizon someone has to try and destroy it . The number of people who are not scientists , epidemiologists or doctors posting unsubstantiated ” facts ” is unhelpful .

  4. Hi Tobi, despite my reluctance to join the conversation and disagreements on Covid 19 on your excellent blog I am responding directly to these comments. I am a retired PhD Medical Scientist with 25 years experience in clinical research, many of those at senior level in 2 global pharma companies. I am also a lover of and frequent visitor to Madeira – for the last 20+ years.

    COVID-19 can sometimes result in prolonged illness, even in young adults and children
    without underlying chronic medical conditions.
    • There are many case reports from people who do not regain their previous health following
    COVID-19.
    • Little is known about the clinical course of COVID-19 following milder illness.
    • In a telephone survey of symptomatic adults who had a positive outpatient test result for
    SARS-CoV-2, 35% had not returned to their usual state of health when interviewed 2–3
    weeks after testing.1
    • Among those 18 to 34 years in good health, 20% (1 in 5) reported that some symptoms
    were prolonged.
    • Risk factors for persistence of symptoms: high blood pressure, obesity, mental health
    conditions

  6. I have mentioned in previous comments that my daughter is in the Medical Profession.
    Her speciality is diabetes.
    Her colleague a Senior Consultant in Diabetics also has concerns about the increase in diabetes
    from Covid sufferers who prior to the illness had good health.

    1. Thanks Erin there are 2 issues here, firstly that people with existing diabetes are more vulnerable to serious Covid disease. Secondly, as you say here, there is increasing concern that Covid 19 is causing diabetes in previously healthy, risk-free people (particularly children). It is well documented that viruses can cause Type 1 diabetes. There is not a definitive study yet for Covid 19 causing diabetes, but evidence is growing.

Many experts are convinced that COVID-19 can trigger the onset of diabetes – even in some adults and children who do not have the traditional risk factors.

      It’s already been well-documented that people with diabetes face much higher risks of severe illness or death if they contract COVID-19. In July, U.S. health officials found that nearly 40% of people who have died with COVID-19 had diabetes.

      “COVID could be causing diabetes from scratch,” said Dr. Francesco Rubino, a diabetes researcher and chair of metabolic and bariatric surgery at King’s College London. Rubino is leading an international team that is collecting patient cases globally to unravel one of the biggest mysteries of the pandemic. Initially, he said, more than 300 doctors have applied to share cases for review, a number he expects to grow as infections flare up again.

  10. Erin/Jane you are very welcome (I will take experience and/or expertise !). There was a feature on Long Covid on BBC Breakfast this morning – many previously fit and healthy people still struggling. I am shocked at the amount of misinformation and misleading reports online so I understand how difficult it is for people to know what is real and valid advice.
    Many people have strong beliefs based on what they read, but if they affect how they and other people behave, it can be very dangerous in our global fight against Covid19.
