But unfair as I don’t think we have people from Brazil passing through Madeira to the UK.

Nothing unfair about it all countries with a strong connection with Brazil are on the list maybe maderia should pull its finger out and go into lookdown sooner rather then later no good putting it off this problem is not going away maybe the little island sould prepare and be safe for the future ?

  3. I was under the impression, UK nationals, with dual residency in Madeira/Portugal, may travel provided they self isolate for 10 days on arrival on the UK and the household occipants they lodge in, does the same ?

  5. We may not have people from Brazil passing through but we certainly have Venezuelans.

      1. In October I had breakfast with a gentleman who had travelled from Venezuela to Madeira to holiday with his son, who played for the Madeiran football team. Unless Madeira or Portugal stop Venezuelans flying from the mainland to the island the variant can and will be brought in. It is not only the UK who can transmit this virus.

  6. The new rule does not apply to British and Irish Nationals or third part country nationals who have UK residency rights.

  7. According to the EasyJet website, all flights are banned from Madeira to UK with immediate effect. The earliest direct flight to Gatwick on sale is 12th February.

If the official Portuguese figures are to be believed then sadly after all the previous preventative measures Madeira is now equal second highest ranking R number with the Azores, only the Algarve has a higher R number and no region in Portugal has an R number below 1. Allowing residents to weekend in Lisbon, catch the virus but then just accept their negative test results on return with no self isolation and second compulsory test five days later may have prevented this tragedy. Sadly it seems forethought or inconvenience for a few hundred probably carefree but influential individuals has resulted in the current situation. I don’t think it has much to do with people coming from South America since chances are if they were infected they would not have just picked it up before flying and the virus would probably have been picked up at the initial test upon arrival.

  9. If people are determined to travel, they will find a way via another European country….!
    The tests are unreliable and were not intended for this purpose, claims the person who invented the test.
