Man in his 40s dies in Jardim da Serra

Of course I’m reading the news all the time, and these stories are becoming more and more frequent.

I have just had a couple of days of very high blood pressure, took myself to hospital, and have my medication changed now, but this kind of story is something I worry about a lot.

A man in his 40s went into cardiopulmonary arrest today and died in Jardim da Serra.

The Volunteer Firefighters of Câmara de Lobos and the Medical Team of Rapid Intervention (EMIR) tried to revive him, without success.

  8. Toby I have just experienced the same during February , High Blood Pressure 170,s 80,s over 100,s , I,m 58 this year , Doctor prescribed one different medication , I think worrying During the Pandemic , reading to much negative news is not helping , Take care

    1. Quite right, news overload can cause chronic anxiety. Ration news to once a day from a trusted source i.e. BBC.

  9. Worry about things you can change, do not worry about things you cant, is my mantra. You will then find that almost everything you were worried about comes out of the worry mode.
    You have gone through a very stressful time and its not yet over, exercise, eat the right food, go out with people who dont just focus on the bad but see the positives and potential in life. Make sure you keep to your medication. All that said, share with people you trust and will help you to get through these hard times Tobi.

  11. Tobi, I have high blood pressure and the right medication helps me and the readings are always good ones. Take care, you are important and cared for by so many. Just hoping for good times ahead for all of us. We all deserve it!

      1. Tobi, You’re alive, it’s better than the alternative. I’m hoping this might put a smile on your face. It’s a copy of a letter I sent to a few friends after receiving the attached letter from the NHS. I had to laugh but if the little old lady down the road had received it she would have put her affairs in order and taken to her bed.

        I awoke this morning, leaped out of bed, thinking if it wasn’t for this bloody virus curtailing my activities, I couldn’t feel better. Check my EMails. Are Suttons offering me free geranium plants, Currys, new TV’s for old ? No but I received this, courtesy of the NHS. From having my jab three weeks ago and thinking things are going to get better, feeling top of the world, so well, I’m thinking of cancelling the life assurance, the NHS spring this on me. I now have an increased risk of becoming seriously unwell from coronavirus. “This is because of a combination of your individual characteristics and their underlying health conditions.” When did this happen ? I’ve been in bed all night, “You may want to read this letter with a family member or carer to make sure you understand the advice it includes. Not only I am now a health risk, over night I have become senile. Incapable of understanding my mail. Suddenly I am in the high risk category, “formally known as clinically extremely vulnerable.” By now I have told my wife to forget the morning Senna Pod tea, I have no need for it. Further it tells me, to allay my fears, “You do not need to contact your GP about this letter. However, if you do not think you are at high risk, or you are concerned about the impact of coronavirus on your health, then you can contact them or the hospital doctor you usually see. Your GP’s contact details can be found below.” Over the course of the day I have telephoned the surgery eight times but I fear the receptionist has succumbed to the virus and is sprawled over the switch board, dead. In desperation I made to way to the Surgery to find the receptionist in good health but unable to answer the telephone as she is inundated by incontinent pensioners. Chin up.

        Important advice to keep you safe from coronavirus (COVID-19)
        We are writing to you because new research commissioned by the Chief Medical Officer has recently enabled us to identify people who may be at increased risk of becoming seriously unwell from coronavirus. This is because of a combination of their individual characteristics and their underlying health conditions.

        This research means we want to offer you further advice and support.
        This letter explains why you may be at high risk and have been added to the list of people who are clinically extremely vulnerable (also known as the shielded patient list),

        You may feel that at this stage of the pandemic, when rates of infection overall are declining, the advice is not relevant to you. However, we think it is important that you are aware of your risk status and of the support available to you, both now and for any future changes in the pandemic. This means that you can make an informed choice yourself.

        You may want to read this letter with a family member or carer to make sure you understand the advice it includes.

        Why you have been identified as someone who may now be at high risk
        The Government is always learning more about coronavirus and the things that might contribute to people becoming seriously ill. They asked a team of experts to look at data from the first wave of the pandemic, to get a better understanding of the things that may mean someone is at a high risk of catching and becoming seriously unwell with coronavirus.

        By putting this new evidence into a risk model with information the NHS already holds, you have been identified as someone who may be at high risk. This is likely to be because you have a combination of underlying risk factors or health issues which, when combined, indicates high risk.

        An extra cautious approach has been taken, so there is a chance that your risk is lower than estimated. Your GP will be made aware that you have been identified in this way. In the future, your risk may be reviewed further, and you will receive another letter if your risk level changes.

        You do not need to contact your GP about this letter. However, if you do not think you are at high risk, or you are concerned about the impact of coronavirus on your health, then you can contact them or the hospital doctor you usually see. Your GP’s contact details can be found below.

        Guidance for people identified now as at high risk
        People in the high risk category are formally known as clinically extremely vulnerable. People who are in this category are currently advised by the Government to shield and stay at home as much as possible until 31 March, except to exercise or to attend health appointments (including of course for vaccination appointments). Even if they have had both vaccination doses, they should continue to follow these shielding measures as we continue to assess the impact of vaccination among all groups.

        You have been added to the list of people who are clinically extremely vulnerable. We currently advise you to follow shielding measures from the date of this letter until 31 March 2021.

        If you are currently employed, you are strongly encouraged to work from home if you can. If you cannot work from home then you should not attend work.

        This letter is a formal shielding notification. If you are not able to work because you are following this advice, then you may be eligible for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (furlough) and you may wish to discuss this with your employer. This letter can act as evidence for your employer, including for statutory sick pay (SSP) purposes or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), to show you cannot work outside your home whilst you are following these shielding measures.
