Cristo Rei viewpoint closed due to risk of falling parts of the monument

The Cristo Rei viewpoint in Garajau is closed due to the risk of parts of the statue falling.

At issue are cracks in the head and face area, which can lead to the fall of parts of that structure.

The Sapadores Firefighters of Santa Cruz were on site and sealed the space.

About two years ago I noticed the marble monument to the evacuees from Gibraltar was rocking badly and if it toppled regardless of the damage to the structure it would hurt or even kill someone, the amount of effort I had to put in to have it sorted was totally unbelievable, try and contact any British consulate, I tried here, tried for Gibraltar, un-contactable, tried the municipality, round in circles for days. Eventually via something completely unconnected the British consulate here contacted me and I brought this up, she then expected me to carry on running round to get it sorted, after a few choice words, she contacted the people who needed to know and it was fixed in 24 hours.
    The wall lyeing across half the road at bottom of our road here is still there since christmas and remainder still standing won’t be standing much longer and it runs at rear of bus shelter, how long will this accident waiting to happen remain that!!!

  2. Well as I remember Crusto Rei has thrown parts around the past few years.

    Incredible that the Authorities on Madeira let’s a well renowned religious/cultural monument and tourist magnet fall to pieces.

    How come there is no foundation set up to look after and finance the care of this Madeiran religious heritage gem.

    Are the politician ungodly atheist that wants this masterpiece destroyed by inaction.

    1. Same with all they do, it looks all great and put on a big show to the population to what they have done, and then left to go to ruin, we could probably fill the comments with examples, but nothing will change.

  3. It’s just a general apathy and lack of understanding by the local population as to why this amazing island is so popular with foreign visitors.

  4. This is the oldest of all the Cristo Rei statues and as such I am guessing the old concrete is deteriorating with age.

It has to have steel inside without steel reinforcing concrete is very brittle, ( concrete has been around for 1000s of years) they have used reinforcing for as long as they have used concrete, wool fibres etc. Steel inevitably ( and particularly with salt air) corodes but the deeper its buried inside the concrete the longer it takes for process to start, once started very difficult to stop, steel once started to rust, will expand to 1.5 times its stating thickness and then pushes ( blows) off the outer concrete cover, we call it ” concrete fategue”
    The way the top of the skull is lifting looks to me like a classic sign of this problem.

  6. We use fibre glass for certain concrete reinforcing these days ( floor screeding ) to name one, almost turning clock back full circle ?
