Portugal to be removed from UKs red list

Portugal will be taken off UK’s virus travel ban ‘red list’ on Monday as the country aims to reopen to Britons who can show proof of vaccination or a negative test from mid-May.

Portugal is set to be removed from the travel ban ‘red list’, paving the way for summer holidays there.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will take the country off the list of 33 Covid-hotspot countries on Monday, it is understood.

  1. Wonderful news Still harsh Restrictions in Scotland its ANY country Not a Red List as such but things are starting to ease off and this is a Positive and Welcome step We can always fly from England ??!! SO needing to return and continue our Cut short December holiday Thanks Tobi

    1. Tobi do you not think repatriation flights will be arranged
      I have been here with my 94 year old mother since 5 December and obviously have not received the vaccine
      I have received nothing but kindness from the wonderful people of Madeira which I will remember for ever

  3. Fantastic news. My wife and son were booked to travel back to UK the following Monday via Lisbon and Madrid and then stay in a quarantine hotel (not ideal, but no choice as son has to return to school to keep his place). If this is confirmed on Monday we can cancel the quarantine hotel and hopefully rebook the flights to cut out the Madrid leg. I suspect that they will still need to fly back through Lisbon unless Easyjet etc reinstate direct flights to Madeira immediately.

    We also know quite a few Madeirans who work in the service industries who have job opening back up in the UK buy have been unable to afford the quarantine flights to get back to them. This will be a huge relief to them.

  8. Earlier this year I said there was light at the end of the tunnel but, it was a long tunnel.

    Well, we have now progressed along the tunnel and the light is getting closer ??

  10. Note that Germany has taken Portugal of It’s danger list but Lisbon, Vale de Tejo, Algarve & Madeira at flagged as at risk. Infection rates on the mainland have improved the figures on Madeira have stalled.

    There is a chance that the UK may still quarantine returnees from Madeira.

  11. *** Update **

    140 Madeirans have become infected with Covid having been vaccinated. It seems they are getting blasé thinking the vaccine gives you immunity, it doesn’t. Even having had 2 jabs the basic rules need to be followed, wear a mask, maintain distancing & wash hands regularly.

    On another point, The Telegraph reports that pensioners & vulnerable people are likely to get a booster jab in the Autumn. Probably a modified vaccine to deal with variants.

Plenty of flights back to the UK via Portugal showing up on flight websites for Easter weekend, whether they fly or not is another thing but I know that people have already booked or changed their flights this morning, maybe jumping the gun a bit but a lot of people (including Locals) have been here since before Xmas. ?

    1. I would certainly be nervous about some of those direct flight options. They were up there well before any of this news and quite clearly were ‘speculative’ and aimed at getting the bookings in. My hope is that if the news is confirmed on Monday, scheduled direct flights will resume from Lisbon and then it should be a 100% safe bet to book Madeira-Lisbon-London.

      Stand to be corrected though… there is almost certainly sufficient demand to run a few ‘repatriation flights’ to get people in Madeira back to the UK and people in the UK back to Madeira.
