Ryanair wants to fly to Madeira

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will have requested numerous ‘slots’ to fly to Madeira, starting next winter.

The news was advanced by António Trindade in the ‘Debate da Semana’ this Friday. The TSF-Madeira program, moderated by Leonel de Freitas, also had Miguel Sousa and Ricardo Vieira as guests.

“Ryanair is also looking at Madeira, the number of slots requested for the operation in Madeira corresponds to a higher number than TAP and EasyJet’ together”, said António Trindade.

The hotelier points out, however, that the big problem is related to the transport of residents.

“Right now the conditions in terms of legislation and mobility subsidy that can effectively attract greater transport competitiveness are not created”.

Still on the issue of air mobility, Trindade also revealed that he spoke with António Costa, during his stay in the Region, about the “scandal” that has been the approach and study of the operation of Madeira Airport.

The commentator considers that the prime minister is “the only person who can solve this desideratum”.

If so, Miguel Sousa considers that “we are set”. “Nobody takes care of anything. President and prime minister come to Madeira and nobody takes care of anything”, he reiterated.

For his part, Ricardo Vieira advocates the creation of a Madeira delegation in Lisbon to deal with the Region’s affairs.

“Screaming doesn’t solve anything… It takes dialogue”, he maintains.

  1. They required 3500 slots which gives 10 to 12 daily flights. However, requiring slots does not mean they will use them. If this goes ahead, announcements will be made around August.

  2. Oh, I hope not, the decent airlines will find their profits diluted……..I personally will not fly with them, their business ethics are horrendous.

    1. I agree totally, would never use them……letting them in would degrade Madeira as a destination

      1. Accomodation in Madeira is a filter. There aren’t that many cheap hotels in Madeira. Not as you find in Algarve, Balearic or Canaries.

      2. Antonio’s point is very apt, although in any holiday destination, you get what you pay for. The difference in Madeira is the natural welcome from the Madeiran people.
        Ryanair is, like Easyjet, who many writing here have no time for, like Whizz, like Jet2, is a model of a cheap airline. I fly Easyjet because it suits me. At Christmas I can save £120. flying Easyjet over Jet 2. If I was to choose Jet 2, for my £120 extra what would I get ? A bit more carry on luggage. If I was still flying long haul, 13 hours to S Africa, then paying extra becomes something to think about.
        Flying with any of the cheap model airlines is basically getting on a bus for three and a half hours with none or very little difference which airline you choose. To talk of Ryanair degrading Madeira, of what are decent airlines, horrendous business ethics does far more to turn me off than flying Ryanair. After the Covid experience The thought of Ryanair increasing the number of visitors and the prosperity of the Madeiran people does nothing but give me pleasure.

  4. I too like to choose what suites,I have travelled with Jet 2 on many occassions.
    The service I received has been equal to the so called better airlines at a cheaper cost.
    Tourism is at an all time and many lively hoods are at stake.
    I personally will think of it as a privilege to again enjoy their welcoming, and I do not think Madeira will be that fussed regarding on how we travel.

  6. RYANAIR is welcome in Madeira we will see a lot changes on the island in the next few years some good some bad due to the pandemic plenty of cheap accommodation currently available for budget Travelers hostels start at around 7 euros night

    1. I live near Stansted but choose to fly easyJet from Gatwick. Jet 2 are too expensive. I would fly Ryanair from Stansted if they were competitive with easyJet
