Netherlands puts Madeira on Green travel list.

Netherlands is placing Madeira on their green travel list, while Portugal will remain yellow, and the Lisbon areas will stay orange.

The Portuguese government has not yet released precise information about the requirements for vaccination and recovery certificates.

  1. They should have asked Merkel first. If they had done so Merkel would have replied that Madeira is a huge danger to Europe and that only white german blood citizens were allowed to travel back to Germany. All the rest Madeireans are dangerous people and should be banned from flying.

    Mallorca is recording 300 cases a day and it is on Germany green list. What a stupid and corrupt government.

    1. Your German neighbors will disagree. Haven´t you read here that Merkel was sent by God to protect EU? And she is protecting EU by banning flights from Madeira.

    1. Yet another proof she is protecting EU interests when she has informed third-countries that they will be allowed to travel to Germany but has not said nothing with regards to Portugal which is a member state of the EU she is protecting. What a miserable leader.

  5. I have to admit that as a non European my knowledge of the politics of European Covid restrictions has its limitations. I rely on daily reading of the online sites from the BBC and Guardian as well as perspectives of family and friends in Germany, France, and Switzerland. Most of the feedback I get regarding Merkel is that while everyone may have issues with some of her policies she is generally respected, especially when compared to her European peers.
    I find the anti Merkel tone of responses I have read over the last several months to be somewhat silly. One can almost get the impression that Merkel should be expected to awake every morning with nothing on her mind other than the status of the Madeiran tourist industry and the thousands of Germans who wish to travel there. The interests of the other 80 million Germans be damned.
    There is little doubt that Madeira has done a great job containing the Covid virus. It has leveraged its geography as an island and done its best to protect the population while salvaging as much of the tourist industry as possible. That it was reported that no one was hospitalized with Covid yesterday is an amazing achievement. From my reading the German government’s restrictive policy regarding Madeira is based on a fear of the Delta variant. While there is no evidence that Madeira is currently teaming with the Delta variant there appears to be a real concern that Madeira s lax policy of letting in British and other tourists without testing if they are vaccinated is a potential recipe for disaster. Britain is hot bed for the Delta variant, and the vaccines, especially the AZ vaccine, have a reduced efficacy against the Delta variant. With some 65000 British tourists expected through August you are playing with fire. Every British tourist should be tested regardless of vaccination status.
    I have loved my 2 visits to Madeira and have booked a 6 week stay this winter. We hope to have German friends visit and have encouraged other family and friends to put Madeitra on their travel plans. I really hope that it works out this sumner and that the dangerous Delta variant doesn’t establish a foothold. At the same time I can’t blame any country for playing it safe.

    1. You should read again carefully some of the comments. I have a friend in Madeira who is not a German National, he has a very ill relative living in Germany and he wants to visit him. He was willing to quarantine when arriving in Germany but because he is not a German national he is not even allowed to board a flight even though he has a ticket. It is likely his relative will pass away soon and Mrs Merkel won’t allow that on the basis that Madeira has 5 or 6 daily cases. The Delta variant represents 40% of the cases in Germany but only 12% in Madeira. This is not about protecting Madeira tourism it is about respecting free of movement of EU citizens within EU. There is absolutely no reason why Madeira is part of that list. As you say Mrs Merkel is not thinking about Madeira but maybe if every German national that arrived in Madeira was directed to a quarantine hotel and the ones that are here were invited to leave now (in the end they came from a region that now has 40% of cases of Delta variant) then maybe someone told Mrs Merkel how germans are being treated in Madeira.

      1. Methinks the man does protest too much. Emotional detachment can be a virtue.

        Ms Merkel does not alone make the rules. Pretty much all EU member countries are democracies, and Germany certainly leads by democratic example.

        It’s wild out there, no thanks to this virus. Lots has to be done on the fly with the best intentions. Cut the lady (and she is a LADY) some slack.
