OUTBREAKS ON CRUISES AFFECT STOPS AND DROP PASSENGERS IN FUNCHAL

‘P&O Ventura’ canceled the stopover in Madeira, scheduled for this Sunday, due to an outbreak of covid-19 on board, being held up in the Canary Islands, according to Jornal Madeira.

The ship was scheduled to arrive in Funchal at 8 am tomorrow, leaving at 5 pm.

12 passengers from one of the ships docked yesterday in the port of Funchal were stranded, after testing positive for covid-19. Passengers were taken to a hotel unit that has this protocol with SESARAM.

Another outbreak occurred on another ship, where the 35 positive cases detected on board refused to stay in the Region, opting to comply with confinement on the ship itself, which continued on its journey.

  1. It is far too early to allow cruise ships to dock in Funchal or indeed any port. The pandemic has not gone away. In the short term it is bringind revenue into Madeira but in the longer term it could have disastrous effects on tourism.

    1. Agree with Sue. Letting too many cruise passengers in is a good way to get th island shut down again

    2. Perhaps a positive view would put things into perspective: the covid testing both here in Madeira and onboard ship is clearly working so should reassure people!? Eighteen months on, how long is long enough to keep things shut down or banned – 2, 3, 4 years? It’s easy enough to curtail things when those solutions only affect others. Covid hasn’t gone away and indeed it is probably unlikely to as it is now endemic, so we must live with it without plunging others into poverty.

  2. We were the only ship in Funchal yesterday and everyone got back on so I don’t know where this information is coming from. They must mean Friday. Life has to carry on, we can’t keep hiding indefinitely, this virus is not going to go away any time soon but as long as you get vaccinated and follow the rules you can do no more.

    1. Yes, Pam, we’ve wasted too much effort (and livelihoods …and lives) on pretending that we can control a virus. Such arrogant hubris!
      As the saying goes, we’re just kicking the can down the road.
      Vaccines are achieving little except reducing severity, do not prevent passing it on in vaxxed or unvaxxed. Masks, as ever, do nothing except continue “the Fear”. And before you say they help, no, there is no evidence, just assumptions. I assume the sun goes around the earth once a day but I am seriously wrong!
