UK GOV backtrack on rules to enter Madeira

The UK GOV site has updated to the rules they changed the other day to enter Madeira.

The rules are back to how they were before, meaning all those vaccinated do not need a test to enter the island.

They either made the mistake of thinking we have the same rules as Portugal, or were confused with the 7 day testing, they everyone needs a antigen test to get into certain places along with their vaccine certificate.

If you have been on the island recently than you will know, that 99% of shops, bars and restaurants are not asking for any proof to enter their business, but the tests are available to all, who wants a free test every 7 days.

  1. The visitmadeira website is very confusing.Part 3 is the same rules as when we visited in November.Part 4says visitors need a PCR test within 48 hours of arrival.

    1. Don’t worry…nothing has changed for entry into Madeira. All residents and visitors need to take a (free) antigen test weekly to enter restaurants bars supermarkets etc. Seems very few are asking for this proof It is better to have them done just in case. You can go to many pharmacies, hospitals or even at departures level at the airport and have the test done. We have had results through in 15 minutes and proof sent to our phones. We are here for 2 months and while it can be a pain going regularly and sometimes queuing, It’s good to know we are clear even if no one is asking for proof at the minute!!

        1. Cause if you read it it doesn’t make sense, they say no test needed fir vaccinated, then further down it says everyone will need a test, if not coming with one a free one at the airport.

  2. Surely it’s most sensible to cover all bases anyway? Why on earth go on a holiday having to worry and be stressed all the time.

  3. What’s the procedure for visitors to get a test? I’ve seen the pop up tents but do I just need to turn up anytime with my passport?

  4. Thinking of coming to Madeira early February but have some questions please.
    Is it the proprietor’s responsibility of bars, restaurants to establish that the customer has been antigen tested in the previous 7 days or the customer’s or both? Is it being legally enforced? Also does this apply to eating outside?

    2. It’s due to end on 15th Jan so may not be active in Feb. All the free test cost the government a lot of money so I’ll be surprised if retained once cases start reducing. IANAL but I believe legally they are recommendations and therefore not legally enforced. Many just have a sign up saying you must have both test and vaccination to enter the restaurant.

  5. We are due to arrive in Madeira on January 22, layover in London, from USA. We are vaccinated and boosted. Do we need to have a covid test done within 48 hours of departure to enter Madeira? Thank you very much to help. Joseph and Carrie
