Go read the plaque, it is explained. The monument is/ wonderful to visit but don’t forget the area behind which was under control of Dom Pedro Hotels control but taken back by the council of Santa Cruz and has ALSO been an eyesore and embarrassment ever since.

Why have the authorities not insisted the owner of the land carry out much needed repairs? I’m aghast that such trivial matters as building without an environmental permit gets such coverage but the neglect of an important landmark is not acted upon.
