as sad that thing here is, as I see it, it could have happened anywhere in the world. It's not a special thing of Madeira. What is special about Madeira is the stubborn negligence of any kind of responsibility when things go wrong. But even that behavior is rapidly poisoning the lives of people, especially in Western societies. I myself buried about 40 (probably more) cats and dogs, all of them were strays, having had all kind of issues (mostly FIV or FELV); finding good vets that do not exploit your vulnerability seeking help for your pet (or sometimes even kind of emotionally feeding on it) has cost me about 20 k (probably more as well). My recommendation would be: try to avoid the hospital; try to go to Vetfunchal (Dr. Eduardo), VetNorte (only for small stuff, no big surgeries), Auqmia. There are some good vets in Canico as well. The case(s) here are worth an entry into the ''Livro de Reclamações'', if you want to risk some kind of revanche that could come from any direction. You have to understand that many Madeirense got some form of basic ''life education" in the UK and mindlessly apply the lessons they got there without much thinking or evolvement. ... Welcome to Madeira. Anyway, your little friend had a good life with you anyway and that is what they can't take away from you, unless you let them ... find a new friend ...there's lots of stray dogs here on Madeira who would be happy to make you happy. ... That should be your revanche.

You must be one of the very few people who have nothing but praise for the vets in Madeira.
I hope for your sake that these positive experiences continue.
In this case, I don't see any significant room for interpretation.
No necessary monitoring was carried out, and obvious and clearly identifiable side effects were ignored. Instructions to discontinue treatment in this form were also ignored. After sending a video of the animal fighting for its life, no emergency assistance was offered; instead, we were wished a peaceful night.
Furthermore, the body was lost in the second clinic and incinerated like rubbish. The clinic itself admits this in its email.
I would like to report something different, but that's how it was.

It’s horrific what has happened. That poor little dog! Heartbreaking.
I had my dog neutered on the island and when I went to collect him he was still under sedation! The vet!!!! Yes the vet offered to put my fur baby in the boot ! Me being a half pint ( the vet was very tall ! )I refused point blank! I told him he needs to be here when he comes around incase of a problem! Omg ! He was not happy. He seemed to get taller with anger !
On my arrival to pick him up I saw him on the table with his hind leg dangling off the side. I could not believe my eyes.
When I put him in the car he was still groggy but at least he could stand.
Thank goodness my boy was ok and he lives a peaceful life now.
Animals have feelings too and I think many forget that.

A sad but nonetheless a very one-sided version of what took place.
Perhaps a response from the vet in question would not go amiss.
On our regular visits to Madeira we actively support the care of the cats in the old town. This has brought us in to regular contact with the vets who willingly offer their services and treatment when necessary
I cannot praise them high enough.

Yup so sad ..
U need justice ..for these incompetent
Fkin idiots
There should be a department here on Madeira that investigate complaints and negligence .and certainly over pricing...

These veterinarians over here seem to have carte Blanche
There needs to be accountability

How do they lose a dog ..
Who are the ones that are responsible .
Should be sacked straight away..

I hope you take these vets to court
And that there is some justice to
This incompetence
Of both vets ...

We saw already this year about the lynx
Thst was accidently ( murdered)
By those in the know
Because it went against certain conditions not to keep this type.of animal

Where it and it's owners had caused no problems ... To anyone outside their home ...
Just other horrible sad humans sticking there noses into a situation without regard for the best outcome for the animal..

This is horrific. Yet another example of the Portuguese inability to receive feedback, let alone criticism, and the mindset that the service provider is always right -- never the customer. It is this deep negligence that led to the deaths of 16 people on the Gloria cable car in Lisbon in September, and now to your friend. I invite any Portuguese to explain or justify this mindset which his deeply hateful and runs contrary to basic human decency.

My heart bleeds for you and totally sympathise with what it is like to loose a loved one regardless of whether it is human or animal.
To some people in some cultures, an animal is worthless and so does not deserve the same care and attention as a human.

I had a perfectly healthy dog sent to a clinic to be castrated at 10am.
The animal was kept in a crate without food in preparation for the operation.
Unfortunately, nothing hapenned until 6pm after clinic had finished for the day and minutes before we arrived to pick dog up.
We were handed an animal clearly still under a bit of sedation bleeding from the operation.
Upon refusing an animal in that state, it was agreed that a better job should be done and so animal was put under general anaesthetic again.
We arrived at 9pm expecting to take the animal home but found him still under the effects of the anaesthetic and unable to stand up.
Again we refused to take animal home in that state.
Much arguing about the inconvenience to the clinic took place as no night staff available but we were worried that we might loose out pet if no expert help was on hand should anything happen during the night snd told them that it was their problem.
The vet agreed to find someone to stay with the dog overnight.
We turned up in the morning to find a black and blue animal that would make most people eyes water.
When we complained, and refused to pay for such an atrocity, the police were called instead of an apology and some remorse shown.
Subsequently we complained to the veterinary authorities who took over 2 years to reply to us and only to say that they could do nothing as the 2 years gap that they have in which to deal with the case had lapsed.

Miserable and unacceptable beyond belief.
