Mismanagement of tourism in Madeira has been epic, and probably will now will continue to spiral down in a race to the bottom for attracting more and more low cost airlines, more and more influencer-led thrill seekers, and more and more s**t deposited all over the island. The magic is well and truly gone. And as for the absolute clusterf*** that is the Simplifica registration/payment app, well that just illustrates the contempt in which the Madeiran government holds tourists. Or it could be just rank incompetence. Or both. In any case, much as Madeira holds a special place in my heart, I have to face the fact that “my” Madeira exists only in the past.
