Is this the final height of the new Savoy Palace?

  3. Makes you wonder how they got planning permission! they have taken all the light away from the flats in front, at least that is how it looks in the picture. Well, not wondering too hard, not too difficult to figure out.

  5. The new Savoy looks totally out of scale for the surrounding area and overshadows the Carlton and Royal Savoy where we have happily holidayed over the years of retirement. I am amazed that local planners allowed the developer and architects to build this lump of concrete more like a block of flats in former East Germany, the more so after the tasteful reconstruction of the marina and gardens area after the flood damage.

  6. We’ve rented an apartment behind this monstrosity, which used to have fabulous sea views, but now……………….nothing. We can see the sea, through the building work, not yet finished. Feel so sorry for residents in the surrounding flats and houses.

  7. What can only be described as a Concrete Monster feel sorry for the people who live close by, their sea views have gone forever how the hell did thay get planning permission for that. Back Handers come to mind

  9. Remember, the apartments behind did not have a sea view when the Old Savoy was there. It’s just they have enjoyed a sea view for so long they forgot.
    I think the businesses behind aren’t bothered to be in the shadow, they have waited a long time to get their customers back.

    Anyhow they still have to build the 4, 300m mobile telephone antenna’s on top yet 😉

  12. It looks like one of those monsterous cruise ships has run aground. Maybe it should be named after whoever gave the final go ahead. Maybe the SS Alberto Jardim or the SS Miguel Albercurque. It could even become a semi permanent monument to their rule over the island.

  14. Yes an absolute monstrosity. The Regency Club my second home for 30 years, and where I will be spending Christmas and New Year, has a ‘threatening’ presence looming over it … the Savoy name has been tarnished for ever …

  17. This is the type of thing we expect to be more at home on the Spanish Costas or in Vegas for goodness sake. It really has no place on Madeira.
    In my opinion, at the forefront of this design is numbers, heads on beds if you like.
    No attempt has been made to draw any parallels with or compliment what Madeira has to offer. It’s natural beauty, it’s landscapes, seascapes, flora, fauna, it’s wonderful history and of course it’s lovely people and customs.
    I see a wasted opportunity, this could have been something really special, something Madeira could have been proud of, a flagship for Madeira. Instead you have an oversized and uninspiring construction which dominates for all the wrong reasons.
    It’s heartbreaking.

  18. Not to mention being pestered on holiday with pesky timeshare salespeople for years to come. Nor a good impression for the first timers to Madeira.

  22. I wonder what impression cruise ship visitors will have as they approach the island now. This monstrosity certainly blocks the view of the hillsides and mountains around Funchal. We loved going on the pier and looking at the wonderful view from there but I doubt it will be the same now.

  23. Anyone who can look back 12 or more years to the old savoy should also know that there was another hotel next to the old Savoy – a pretty ugly green building. The Savoy Palace replaces both the old hotel and that green building. Hence it looks now like a single long hotel.
    One benefit for the extra rooms should be more possibilities to get a few (value?) extra days and get a cheaper flight for say Weds rather than the expensive Monday flights.

    Yes indeed it is big even though it replaces 2 hotels — but for many years the island and city were held back after the crash in 2008. For many years it was looking poorer. I would have thought many people there will be delighted to see the economy of the area go up and see the boost that the rebuilt Savoy Palace will bring.

  24. It is difficult to describe such a Diabolical Project in any pleasant terms so I will not bother.

    It was clear from the start that this sort of thing would happen has anyone found out if any back hander`s have been made, and if so, who to. Lets hope the the Madeiras Government (Panning Department? if there is such a think have now learned their lesson.

    Will I be staying there. NOT BLOODY LIKELY.
