TOURISM AND SIMILAR SERVICES MAY BE THE NEXT TO BE VACCINATED

The regional secretary of Health revealed this morning that tourism and similar services may be the next groups to be vaccinated in the Region.

“We are going to start now with other critical services. After education, what is being planned is in terms of tourism and the like because the hotel industry will allow us to continue to recover our economy ”, said Pedro Ramos.

The secretary in charge of Health also highlighted the fact that the measures to contain covid-19 are having an effect. “Our cases are decreasing. For two consecutive days, we have had less than 20 cases. Our goal is to have less than 10 cases per day and then we will have more confidence to start expanding all measures ”, he stressed.

Pedro Ramos was speaking on the sidelines of the visit to the pavilion of the Francisco Franco Secondary School, where the testing process of more than 2,200 students began today.

All students are to be tested before their return to school, and all teachers have or are being vaccinated.

  1. I thought the elderly and vulnerable were on the priority list. Only aged 79 so far in Prazeres as far as I can find out. My husband was in this 75 and over with health issues group which was registered on 17th February. Still not received any contact. I did call the health centre but was told ‘not yet’. Confused to read this new article.

      1. Are you familiar with the Portuguese vaccination program stages (programmed dates and groups) to say that they are not doing well the elderly? Or is your comment based on vaccination programs in other countries?

        Did you read in the news article above that there had been changes in priorities and that elderly who were programmed to get a jab on a specific date will now be posponed?

  2. Yes, I did read the article above but it still doesn’t explain why (apart from helping the tourism industry) the elderly and vulnerable vaccinations are being delayed.

    1. As I said, there is nowhere stated in the article that vaccinations are being delayed to include specific groups you are just assuming that it the case but it isn´t.

      You say that your husband is 75 with underlying health issues. As you are probably are aware not all health issues are given priority in the first stage. These priority groups are listed here:

    I am 73, highly vulnerable for several reasons and I would definitely not survive an infection.
    These facts are known to and deposited at SESARAM
    So I am staying at my house and garden and have stopped all social contacts since December.
    My wife does the necessary shopping once a week.

    Yet, there is obviously no hope for a jab in the near future. A jab that would give me some freedom.

    1. I totally agree wifh you, it’s stupid to vaccinate tourism workers now when most is still closed, and will stay that way till at least June.

  4. Elizabeth and Friedl, you should probably be aware that the underlying diseases that are prioritized are specified by DGS here:

    If you have not been vaccinated in Phase-1 it means that as much as the underlying conditions concern you, you are technically not considered a priority group. If you have other underling health issues you will be vaccinated in Phase 2 which starts this month.

    As I said above, there is nothing in the news article saying priorities had changed. The people who have to be vaccinated in Phase-2 will still be vaccinated in Phase-2.

  5. Friedl, Just like you my husband and I have been stuck in our home for 13 months because he is very high risk. He has a very weak immune system and like yourself catching the virus could be very dangerous. We do understand the economic situation but an article written in January stated Portugal’s first priority for vaccinations was the elderly and vulnerable which gave us hope. That hope seemed to drift away today when I read the above article.

  7. Elizabeth and Friedl, the vaccination program is being followed just as planned in December, there haven´t been people left behind or people who had priority and had their jabs postponed. While I understand your concerns, the priority criteria in terms of underlying illness is very well defined here:

    So if you haven´t been called for Phase-1, it means that the underlying illnesses you have were not eligible for Phase-1, just Phase-2.

    In any case, it is good that you have had option of having stayed at home this last year, probably with any loss income. There are many +65 people in Madeira with underlying illnesses which had to present themselves at work every day in the last year. For them, staying and home and protecting themselves without loss of income, was not even an option.

      I fulfill all requirements for Phase 1, confirmed by an official medico, and booked into SESARAM plan.
      But I have not had the call/appointment yet. Poor organisation.

      1. Friedl, look at the vaccination plan published in DGS. Phase-1 is still ongoing.

  8. Antonio,, My husband has previously had cancer, he has primary progressive MS and he can just go for an appointment at the hospital and catch an infection and be in bed for a week. We sent off all the doctors reports and his registration was actually validated when we applied in the category 80’s or over or 75’s with health issues. Only my humble opinion but if he catches the virus I don’t think it would end too well. If you had to live with this scenario you might have a different opinion about how important it is to receive the vaccine. We are not asking for special favours of any kind but just followed the rules as they were when we registered.

    1. Elizabeth, as much as you have my sympathy, having had cancer or suffering from primary progressive sclerosis is not a criteria to be part of Phase-1. One thing is not agreeing with the criteria that has been defined nationwide back in December, a different thing is saying that your husband should had been vaccinated already based on that criteria and he has not.

      Lots of people waiting for its turn. My parents themselves are over 70 and suffer from diabetes but they are not part of Phase-1 either. All I can say and wish is that you keep safe and your turn for the jab comes soon.

  9. Old people should not be a priority anyway. They are retired and can stay safe at home. The people who have to go to work everyday should be vaccinated first.

  11. My husband and I are are 76 & 73 respectively, resident in Garajau (Sta Cruz) and have been given appointments for Thursday this week. Therefore I think all those concerned people in this post should also be covered in the current phase.
