143 new situations, and 17 in hospital.

The Regional Directorate of Health reports, today, that there are 143 new situations that are being studied by the health authorities.

Only eight are from the Madeira Airport testing operation and 135 related to contacts with positive cases, situations reported to the SRS24 line or by SESARAM, EPERAM. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

17 people are currently hospitalized, 14
in the Multipurpose Unit and 3 in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to COVID-19.

  1. This rise was inevitable and you still see people walking around with no face masks, even police.

  2. Harry Johnston,face masks outside in the open air will not and does not make a blind bit of difference.masks should be a matter of choice . If people are that worried and think it is some sort of bubonic plague well they should stay in and let the others get on with their lives in peace.

    1. Wearing a mask in the open air is futile and of no effect. The air around you is constantly moving and any traces of a virus will float to the ground and die. But, when inside there is less ventilation and people are much closer so wearing a mask is a benefit.

      1. If you are sitting at a restaurant terrace they will float not only to ground but also to your meal. Enjoy your Covid-free meal because the air around is constantly moving.

    2. Epidemiologists disagree, Alan. Unless you are standing in a high wind, and not downstream from each other, transmission is still a function of distance and prophylactic measures, outdoors as in indoors. Outdoors, transmission is less likely at the same distance, compared to indoors IF ALL OTHER FACTORS ARE EQUAL. But if you shout out while next to someone, or run past them at close quarters, exhaling a large volume of micro-droplets, with very little breeze and you are not wearing a mask, you are MORE likely to give them the virus than if you were indoors, both wearing masks and appropriately social distanced.

      Harry is right. Although most people are wearing masks, PLENTY are not wearing them correctly, consistently or at all.

  3. All experts on this matter are here on this blog and ignore the rule of law.
    As in most Asian country’s and for years not months, keep your germs to yourself and if you don’t get prosecuted is the mantra in places like Japan, Singapore and others around the Pacific ring.

  4. So if a mask is that good all these Asians countries must be Covid free as they have been wearing there masks outside by law for all that time.

  5. Masks do stop infections its not rocket science. They might not stop all infection but they block a large number of viral particles being breathed in / out of the wearer, and so wearing one will likely decrease the severity of the symptoms (e.g. if some covid infected idiot coughs in your face and spews a large amount of the virus straight down your throat to your lungs you are far far likelier to end up in a bad way than if you’re wearing a mask which will block a lot of it, giving you a lower initial viral dose which your immune system can then have time to recognize and fight before it grows into something too big to handle. It’s the people who have large initial viral doses that end up in trouble.)

  6. Outdoor activity is certainly safer but not 100% safe. In the US at least 11 people were infected at an outdoor event where Trump announced his new Supreme Court nominee. Several hundred people were sitting close together and most were not wearing masks.
    The true number of infected persons from this event has remained unknown as the White House has always for political reasons concealed the true number of its infected staff. In addition the White House showed no interest in contact tracing of invited guests from the Washington area as well as those who travelled to the event from other parts of the country.

  7. Iv’e got it now, we all do nothing and pretend there isn’t a problem and whom ever happens to survive buries all those who don’t and starts to rebuild the world. Done!
    In a world of less than 2 billion the last time this approach was taken ( by no vaccine availability ) over 100 million people died!!! I wonder what that did to the world economy!!!!! Now we have almost 8 billion and growing the numbers go off the charts

  8. I see from 1st Jan next year visitors from uk will be banned from visiting madeira as we will have left the EU and the rules about covid from non EU countryside will be applied.
