Christmas is approaching fast

I’m really find it hard to get into the Christmas spirit this year, the news seems to be getting worse and worse.

Today Germany looks as though they will go into a full lockdown, and I wonder how many more places will before we get to Christmas.

On a brighter note from the video below by Bee With Us I see there are some new decorations up in town, and I have not yet walked along the main avenue yet, which I will do in the next few days.

  1. I think the Christmas spirit is all over the world where we don’t know if we are staying or going.

    There’s rumours that London will go on tier 3 since lockdown been lifted there’s been a huge rise in new cases as well well as deaths.

    So again Christmas is up in the air for many people will be won’t be kinda thing.

    Madeira being a small place where most families lives by each other and being Madeira ,won’t be quite as depressing or sad as it will be in other parts of the world like here in Uk. Makes me sad that grandparents wait a year to see their grandchildren and children all over the country will be someone an old person a disabled person all alone. 😢

  2. My son lives and works in London and during the last lockdown we decided that because I am 80 and should be in line for a vaccination soon he would stay in his bubble in London for Christmas. That leaves 2 of us my eldest son and me. He does not want Christmas although I am putting up some decorations so this is the first Christmas that I have not catered for the full deal and believe it or not I am missing it. We live in EastbAnglia and we are in tier 2 with rising cases too.

  3. Yes , i agree , there are no Christmas feeling , also the Christmas Songs Sound to me like an Illusion !
    Lockdown will Start on Wednesday here in Germany , But the Shops for Food are Open 🍤🥂…enjoy the Atlantik and Madeira Tobi , here also Bad Werther 😉

  4. That’s sad news for Madeira and for all the German visitors planning a stay over Christmas.
    I’m also seeing reports in the media (although I don’t know how true/inflated it’s being reported), that from 1st Jan there’ll be no guaranteed travel for UK visitors to the EU, and vice versa, unless the UK goes on the EU’s “safe list”. Yet more disruption!

  5. The situation will take a long time to improve if people continue to ignore the rules. I see images of crowds of Christmas shoppers out on the streets here in the UK as if it was a normal Christmas. So maddening.

  6. People in the UK are approaching saturation point and won’t tolerate much more of the lockdowns and quite right too given the total incompetence of the government. A few months ago they told us wearing masks wa a waste of time. And Johnson himself doesn’t even understand his own rules.

    As for Madeira this is the last day of our holiday on this beautiful island. The Christmas lights seem the best ever and the hospitality of Madeiran people is as wonderful as ever. But so so sad to see all those new 5 star hotels past the Lido all apparently shut down. Many will probably not reopen.

  7. We are still hoping to be there for New Year fingers crossed. At this time of year we would normally be full on at church with Advent but unfortunately our church is closed although our wonderful minister Katie has done a weekly online service for us but still missing our church family

  9. Think it’s the same everywhere Tobi…..the Covid situation is really too serious for anyone with a grain of sense to think a “normal” Christmas is a good idea. No doubt there will be some idiots who insist on partying like it’s 2019, but most people I’ve spoken to are pretty much hankering down till we can all get our shots, and planning a very scaled back Christmas this year.
    Haven’t read anything yet about when Madeira will get access to one of the vaccines??

  10. Christmas will be different but it can never be cancelled, I mean the real Christmas. Europe is soon in lockdown mostly because how the people behave and ignore the rules! and looking at posts in Madeira life, mane people, who want a good night life with plenty of booze, who are usually go to places like Ibiza, Tenerife etc,,flock to “safe” Madeira without sticking to the rules, with all its consequences, numbers are rising and probably restrictions will follow. So sad.

    1. Maybe we should all spare a thought this Christmas for those who have lost loved ones to this virus . To those who have lost their jobs and don’t know how they will keep a roof over their heads or feed their families . To all the health care workers who have kept going regardless.
      Whether or not you can go on holiday is nothing compared to what people all over are going through at the moment .

  11. We’re booked to come back to Madeira on January – after a whole year away. Now, as we’re 75 and 80, we’re thinking of postponing again until we’ve been vaccinated….but miserable to be missing our Madeira Christmas.
    Meanwhile, like you Tobi, the Christmas spirit seems to be eluding us…..but I do believe there’ll be better times ahead with all the new vaccines coming out. The world’s been through plagues and disasters before and it’s still here, just hope we are too!

    2. Felicity, you need to keep in touch with your carrier as Brits are banned from travelling into the EU from Jan 1st due to the pandemic. Hopefully Madeira will open a corridor with the UK but we have to wait and see 🤞

  12. I think l agree with you Tobi, our health authorities are talking of the 3rd wave is coming and don’t know how they will cope this winter.
    Afraid people are not following the advice many just go about as normal.
    I still feel people should be tested before travel and hope the vaccine will take off but younger people not in key roles workwise don’t see the need to be vaccinated.

  13. Hello all,
    I arrived Madeira yesterday afternoon from Berlin. In the evening I was at the port, I have already made my covid test in Germany and have seen the Christmas lights, it’s so beautiful! The atmosphere was so wonderful, I’m glad to be in Madeira, in Germany the situation is very bad.
    BTW. I noticed that the wearing of the mask is observed much strictly than in Berlin, perhaps a reason for the high infection rates in Germany.
