Just a few stories in the news which may be of interest.
Work has started on the lido swimming complex which was closed after damage to the area in 2010, The work which has started on the west side of the complex, where there is bathing areas and access to the sea should be finished in time for summer, so this area could be open for use. The main area with swimming pool is due to be finished in 2014.
New sand has arrived at Calheta beach, and they have reinforced the walls round the bay, lets hope this will help with the problem of loosing the sand each year. The hotel is going up fast at the east end of the front of Calheta, and I hope they will tidy the marina area up which has had a lot of damage from falling rocks.
The North coast of Madeira and Porto Santo is on Orange alert due to rough seas. Waves are expected between 2.5 and 3.5 meters and increasing to 4-5 meters over night. This alert is valid from 1pm Friday 22 Feb to Saturday 23 Feb.
Sa supermarkets seem to be closing down in many areas now, with about five closing in the last week or so, including Camacha, Santo Antonio, Funchal, (near the hospital), and Garajau. No news yet to say if they have a buyer or not, and making more than 500 people unemployed.
The Cinema at Camacha shopping will also close next Tuesday, this will just leave the one cinemar open on the Island at the Forum shopping centre. If you remember the Cinema complex at Madeira Shopping closed in January.
