  1. Good and sensible article.

    As said, there has been a lot of effort and contingency plans put in place to prepare Madeira for the virus arrival. It is not possible to control the ones who are arriving infected (and they will eventually arrive) but a good strategy might help preventing that large chains of community transmisson occur. Hopefuly, Mr. Corona won´t like > 20º temperatures.

A very interesting article thanks Peter after 2 months on this beautiful island we have to return home to the UK next week so it’s going to be difficult to take on all the measures and precautions which have been put in place hopefully in the UK and to try to stay clear of this terrible virus.

  4. Cristiano Ronaldo travelled back and forth from Italy. He wasn’t tested or held in quarantine or had his flights cancelled.

    The world wide news coverage of this Corona virus is nauseating. It’s making everyone scared. It’s people control by the governments. We must put our faith in God only.

    1. Darling there is no God. Ronaldo was tested in Italy before he came to Madeira, do you think he would come and put his mum at risk without tests… People should be scared, its a serious virus especially for the elderly. And it will only get worse.

  5. Keith – best pack plenty of toilet rolls, hand wash and paracetamol as the shelves of many supermarkets are empty. We have been to Madeira many times and spent 5 weeks there recently and love it!

  6. Probably needs keeping in perspective,
    approximately 142,000 died from measles worldwide in 2018.

    1. Exactly, how many die from flu each winter? It’s people who have pre-existing conditions that need to be extra careful. This corvid-19 gets into the lungs so people with respiratory problems are prone. People on chemo in particular are prone as the treatment hammers hell out of the immune system. With no prospect of any inoculation for at least a year………

  7. Dear Tobi I was saddened at your comment that there is no God in your article 7th March. I believe there is a God, and we will all have to stand before Him on Judgement Day. I have been a Christian for over 50 years. And my faith has been pivotal in my life.

  8. Hopefully Madeira will stay virus free. We are coming out 21 March for 5 weeks & when we return to UK end of April hope all the fuss of panic buying: loo rolls, pasta,rice, paracetamol, tinned goods will be over – or needed & we won’t have any ☹️

  9. We were out in Madeira 13th Dec for 2 weeks. Came out with a virus but cleared by the 2nd week. All the locals were coughing and some really poorly. We came home 28th Dec and I was really poorly again. Because I have asthma my breathing was bad and needed antibiotics with stronger ones the 2nd week. My point is could the awful virus have already been around but because some people thought it might be just a cold or even flu as not everyone goes to the doctors and could early gone under the radar but because the media get involved and scares everyone with the China virus. It’s took me almost 8 weeks to recover. We are thinking of coming to Madeira in May but are being very cautious and waiting. Obviously we don’t want to bring any bugs with us to such a lovely island with lovely locals. Hoping this awful virus stays clear of the island.
